New Marvel Hero’s Potential Mutant Status Addressed By Showrunner After Disney’s MCU TV Show Debut

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Wonder Man.

Andrew Guest, the creator of the new Disney+ series Wonder Man, recently addressed questions about whether the character Simon Williams is a mutant after his introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show itself follows Simon, an actor who is determined to be cast as the lead in a Wonder Man movie remake.

Despite the full season being available, some mysteries still need solving, like what’s next for Simon and Trevor Slattery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if Simon’s powers mean he’s a mutant.

During an interview with The Direct, Guest opened up about Simon’s potential mutant status.

The showrunner said he and the other producers talked about this during the planning stages, but decided it wasn’t something they needed to include in the show. He prefers to let fans and online communities discuss and theorize about it instead.

When asked directly if he knew the answer to the question about mutants, Guest said he did, but he isn’t sharing it publicly.

That’s a fair question, and we did talk about it. Ultimately, we decided not to address it. I’ll defer to those who typically ask those kinds of unusual questions.

During the interview, the showrunner, Guest, brought up the X-Men while talking about where Simon’s abilities came from. He explained that these powers needed to fit Simon’s personality. He was inspired by how powers in the early X-Men movies often had a strong psychological component, and he wanted to incorporate that same idea into Wonder Man.

Unlike many superheroes in Marvel movies who embrace their abilities, Simon struggles with his powers. According to Guest, “Simon felt like his powers were something that just happened to him, not something he welcomed or wanted to understand.”

Presenting Simon’s abilities like this, and keeping the origin of those powers a secret, sets the stage for his entire story arc.

We really wanted Simon Williams’ powers to reflect his personality. Looking back at the first X-Men movie, those characters’ abilities felt deeply connected to the emotional and life changes they were going through. With Simon, we wanted his powers to feel like something that happened to him, rather than something he embraced or even wanted to understand. He wasn’t curious about them – they just felt like obstacles. This approach really helped us tell the story we wanted to tell about his character.

We deliberately avoided the typical origin story where a character discovers their superpowers as a child. Instead, we approached it from a different angle. More importantly, we wanted to ensure that Simon’s powers didn’t define who he was as a person.

When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, they gained the rights to popular characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has gradually begun to include the idea of mutants in its films and series.

The X-Men have been featured in more than a dozen movies, including classics like X-Men, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and The New Mutants. A wide range of talented actors, such as Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and many others, have brought these beloved characters to life on screen.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m so excited to hear that Disney is finally making an X-Men movie that will officially be part of the MCU! It’s been a long time coming. Apparently, they’re moving forward with Jake Schreier as the director – he did a great job with Thunderbolts, so I have high hopes for this one.

The new version will come out after Avengers: Secret Wars hits theaters in December 2027, but we don’t have an exact release date for it yet.

Now it’s up to Marvel Studios to decide if Simon is a mutant and whether he’ll appear in an X-Men movie. The showrunner hasn’t given a clear answer, so fans are still guessing about Simon’s future and if he has powers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Wonder Man is available to stream on Disney+.
