Blumhouse Developing Haunted White House Movie Based on Hit Horror Comic The Exorcism at 1600 Penn

Atomic Monster and another company originally began as competitors, but they merged to become a leading horror film studio in Hollywood. Together, they’ve produced many of the most popular horror movies of the past few years and recently achieved another milestone.

The company is adapting Hannah Rose May’s comic book series, The Exorcism at 1600 Penn, into a feature film. The story is a supernatural thriller taking place in the White House.

The first issue of this four-part comic series came out on August 19, 2025. While it’s a relatively new comic, it quickly caught the eye of Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.

This graphic novel series, published by IDW, is adapted from a novel with illustrations by Vanesa del Rey. The story centers on a terrifying supernatural battle that unfolds at the most well-known address in America.

The Exorcism at 1600 Penn centers on Kelly Doyle, the first female President of the United States, as she faces intense political pressure and the challenges of being a mother to two teenagers. Juggling these responsibilities with the threat of international conflict, Kelly is already stretched thin when she discovers a terrifying new threat: a demonic battle unfolding within the White House itself.

Blumhouse’s head of feature development, Turek, explained to Deadline that they were immediately captivated by The Exorcism at 1600 Penn because of its realistic and pressing nature. He praised Hannah for crafting a story that skillfully blends traditional demonic possession horror with current political anxieties, creating something both daring and relatable. Turek stated that this type of innovative material is exactly what Blumhouse seeks when venturing into new areas of horror, and they are eager to find a director who can bring this story to life with the appropriate scope and vision.

I’m thrilled to be partnering with Blumhouse to adapt The Exorcism at 1600 Penn for the big screen,” the author said. “Blumhouse has really shaped modern horror, and I couldn’t ask for a better team to work with on this project. I also want to thank my partners at IDW for all their hard work getting this story out to the world.

I’ve been following May’s work for a while now, and I’m really impressed! Before she created the intriguing The Exorcism at 1600 Penn, she also brought The Guy in the Chair to life with Dark Horse. But it doesn’t stop there – she’s a talented actor too, and I always enjoyed seeing her on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
