I was so incredibly saddened to hear about Catherine O’Hara. She was a truly iconic actress – I mean, who could forget her in films like those hilarious Christopher Guest movies, or classics like Home Alone? And of course, Schitt’s Creek was just brilliant. Sadly, she passed away at her home on January 30th, at the age of 71, after a short illness, according to her representative. It’s a huge loss for anyone who loves film and comedy.
Catherine O’Hara began her career at the Second City theater in Toronto and was an original cast member of SCTV in 1976, alongside stars like John Candy and Eugene Levy. She won Emmy Awards for her work on both SCTV and Schitt’s Creek, and recently received a nomination for her role on The Studio, where she played a former studio head and mentor. She met her husband, Bo Welch, an award-winning production designer known for his work with Tim Burton, while filming Beetlejuice, and they married in 1992.
Over her 50-year career in film and television, O’Hara was known for playing quirky and lovable characters, though she was a remarkably versatile actress. She once told Vulture, “I often say I love playing people who are unaware of how others perceive them, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that describes everyone.”
