Netflix Reboots Little House on the Prairie: Potential New Ending For Classic Western

Netflix is bringing back the beloved Western series Little House on the Prairie, over 50 years after it originally aired on NBC. The reboot is planned for release in late 2026, and could offer fans a more hopeful conclusion to the story of the Ingalls family and their life in Walnut Grove.

Based on the classic books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House on the Prairie tells the real-life story of Wilder’s childhood on the Minnesota prairies in the 1800s. It’s one of several historical Western shows Netflix has released since early 2025, joining titles like American Primeval and The Abandons.

Many episodes of Little House on the Prairie made viewers cry during the 1970s and 80s, but the show’s finale was particularly emotional. In a dramatic scene, the Ingalls family used dynamite to destroy their house, preventing a greedy landowner from taking it.

Netflix Is Rebooting Little House On The Prairie In 2026

I’m so excited for the new Little House on the Prairie series coming to Netflix! Filming actually started in early 2025, and Netflix has said we can expect it to premiere sometime in 2026. I’ve heard the young actress, Alice Halsey, who’s only eleven years old, will be playing a reimagined version of Laura Ingalls, and I think she’s going to be wonderful!

Joining Halsey, Luke Bracey will portray Laura’s father, Charles Ingalls. Warren Christie, known from October Road, will play family friend John Edwards, and Alyssa Wapanatâhk, who appeared in Peter Pan & Wendy, will play White Sun, a member of the local Native American tribe. Initial glimpses of the series indicate it will closely follow the story of the original television show.

This Classic Western’s Original Ending Needs To Be Fixed

Despite doing a lot right, Netflix’s adaptation of Little House on the Prairie needs to update one particularly difficult storyline. While the original series was progressive for its time in addressing tough topics like racism, colonialism, abuse, and sexual violence, it definitely missed the mark on one issue and should be corrected now.

The show’s final scene, where the Ingalls’ family home was destroyed, deeply upset many fans who had watched for nine seasons. However, this event mirrored what commonly happens to movie and TV sets after filming ends – they are often dismantled or demolished.

The set for Walnut Grove was already scheduled to be torn down, so the writers used this in the final episode. While viewers didn’t need to know this was happening behind the scenes, the dramatic explosion broke the spell of the show – a beloved Western that had felt real for eleven seasons.

Netflix Can Officially Rewrite Little House On The Prairie’s Ending

With Netflix now owning the rights to reboot Little House on the Prairie, a show many believed would never return, they have a chance to give the story a more satisfying conclusion. This could allow Walnut Grove to remain a peaceful and complete community, and properly celebrate the legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her beloved books.

It’s still unclear how long the new Little House on the Prairie reboot will last on Netflix. However, it’s crucial that this version is successful and doesn’t repeat the issues caused by the controversial storyline where Walnut Grove was destroyed in 1983.
