Alexander Skarsgård & Margot Robbie’s The Legend of Tarzan Surges on Streaming 10 Years Later

The movie, based on the well-known character Tarzan, did well in theaters largely because of the two lead actors’ popularity. While critics had varying opinions, The Legend of Tarzan remains an enjoyable film even a decade later.

The new adventure film opened at number three on Prime Video’s U.S. charts, pushing A Minecraft Movie down to fifth place. However, it couldn’t climb higher, as the action film starring Jason Momoa and Bautista held the top spot, and the hit series Sinners remained strong in second.

The film quickly gained popularity in Nigeria and South Africa, opening at number one on January 28th. It moved to second place in both countries the next day, and by January 30th, it ranked fourth in Nigeria and third in South Africa.

The movie The Legend of Tarzan tells the story of John Clayton, also known as Tarzan, who leaves London to return to the African jungle. He’s persuaded to go back by George Washington Williams to look into reports of slavery. David Yates, known for directing the Harry Potter films, directed the movie, and the screenplay was written by Adam Cozard and Craig Brewer.

The film featured a strong cast including Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, along with Samuel L. Jackson, Ella Purnell, Djimon Hounsou, and stars Bill Skarsgård and Margot Robbie.

While The Legend of Tarzan brought in $357.2 million globally, it wasn’t considered a financial win. Critics weren’t impressed, giving it a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences offered a slightly better, but still lukewarm, 58% score. Given its large $180 million production cost, the film ultimately fell short of being commercially successful.

What’s Next for The Legend of Tarzan Leads?

The film came out after Alexander Skarsgård became well-known for his role as Eric Northman on the TV show True Blood, which finished in 2014. Margot Robbie also gained prominence, first with her part in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, and then by playing Harley Quinn for the first time in the 2016 superhero movie Suicide Squad.

Following The Legend of Tarzan, both actors have become even more established stars. Margot Robbie has earned critical praise for roles in films like I, Tonya (2017), which earned her an Oscar nomination, and Bombshell (2019). But her popularity reached new heights in 2023 when she starred as Barbie in the hugely successful movie based on the popular toy.

She is next set to play Cathy in and has an undisclosed role in the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel.

Skarsgård went on to appear in the popular HBO series Big Little Lies, playing Perry Wright, the husband who abused Nicole Kidman’s character, Celeste. He then gained further recognition with roles in Succession and the horror film Infinity Pool. His latest project has earned three nominations for BAFTA awards.
