Damon Lindelof, the creative force behind hit shows like Lost, The Leftovers, and Watchmen, has a new project in development. HBO has ordered eight episodes of his adaptation of a suspense thriller, which he’s writing and executive producing. Like his previous work, it promises to be a gripping and unsettling story.
Based on Adrian McKinty’s popular novel of the same name, The Chain is the first project resulting from a new partnership with Media Res, the television studio behind shows like The Morning Show and Pachinko. While specific details are currently confidential, Lindelof is developing the story and expanding on the world of McKinty’s award-winning thriller. Lindelof will also be the showrunner, a role he hasn’t taken on since HBO’s Watchmen, which famously built upon the work of Alan Moore.
Although we don’t know exactly what Lindelof has planned for his adaptation, the compelling summary of Adrian McKinty’s novel, The Chain, gives us a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming HBO mystery.

I was immediately captivated by the unique and compelling idea behind Adrian’s book – I couldn’t believe I hadn’t come up with it myself! I’ve been looking for a thrilling story to adapt, and this one has everything I love: it’s dark, unusual, and incredibly exciting. I’m thrilled to be working with Francesca, Casey, and Michael again – they gave me my start at HBO fifteen years ago, and I’m excited to create something special with them that adds to their already impressive work with THE CHAIN.
