Neuralink patient has “new hope” amid successful trial

A patient participating in Neuralink’s trial has expressed renewed optimism thanks to the chip implant, sharing that he’s now able to resume his schoolwork after being paralyzed.

The medical field is constantly making new discoveries, from innovative weight loss drugs to technologies that help people regain lost function after limb loss.

Neuralink, the company founded by Elon Musk, began testing its brain implant in 2024. The device uses artificial intelligence to understand a user’s intentions and has already demonstrated potential in areas like playing chess.

So far, 21 people have participated in the Neuralink trial, including Sebastian Gomez-Pena, one of the first participants from the United Kingdom.

I was so amazed to read about Gomez-Pena! Apparently, after a terrible accident left him paralyzed, he’s been using Neuralink to still be able to do his work while going to medical school. It’s incredible to think about how technology is helping him continue pursuing his dreams.

He told Sky News this technology offers a renewed sense of optimism. He explained that people in his situation constantly try to regain movement, but now, when he attempts to move a hand, it’s encouraging to see an actual response.

“You just think it, and it does it.”

Gomez-Pena isn’t the first person to have success with the trial. In late 2024, a patient named Alex received the implant and was able to play Counter-Strike once more.

Noland Arbaugh, the first person to receive the implanted chip, is amazed by its functionality. He’s been able to play Chess and use social media simply by thinking – no physical interaction needed.

Arbaugh explained that Twitter initially suspended his account, mistakenly believing it was automated. However, X, now owned by Elon Musk, restored his access after confirming he was a real person.
