Hytale accused of taking players’ usernames and giving them to content creators

Players of the game Hytale are worried about a recent trend: usernames are seemingly being changed from long-time players and given to content creators.

Before you can play Hytale, you’ll need to choose a username for your account. This username has to be unique – no two players can have the same one – so everyone can be easily recognized in the game.

Players who purchased the special Founders edition could secure their preferred in-game names before the game officially launched. Everyone else had to compete for names when they started playing.

We’ve noticed a problem where some players are losing their chosen usernames after registering them.

Hytale players concerned as usernames get reassigned

Several content creators have shared on social media that they were able to reclaim their desired usernames after contacting Hytale support when those names were initially taken by others.

Some players have successfully claimed desirable in-game names by contacting the game developers. For instance, a YouTuber known as ‘The_Horizon’ was able to register the name ‘Horizon’, and ‘MashClash’ secured the name ‘Mash’ after it had already been taken by someone else.

After looking into it further, the original player discovered that the game had replaced the unique names of players with generic ones. For example, a player previously known as Mash was given the name ‘CoralShield434,’ and Horizon became ‘Hxrizn.’

The developers haven’t officially explained this problem yet, so it’s unclear why these changes happened or if the original owners of the names were asked for their input before the transfer.

This has already worried many people in the community, particularly because the usernames are simple and don’t seem to be attempts to pretend to be someone else.

One Reddit user expressed strong frustration, saying they’d be very upset if they lost their username due to this issue. Another user simply stated that the policy was not well-considered.

We’ll be sure to update this story as soon as the devs respond.
