Split Fiction game director gives exciting update about Sydney Sweeney movie

I’m so excited about the Split Fiction movie! Josef Fares, the game director, just gave a quick update saying things are moving forward, and Sydney Sweeney is still set to star. It’s great to hear things are on track!

In 2025, Split Fiction became popular with both critics and players thanks to its engaging story and unique gameplay for two people, selling over four million copies.

The story follows Zoe, a fantasy author, and Mio, a sci-fi writer, as they try out a simulation that places them inside the worlds they’ve created.

Just two weeks after its release, a movie adaptation was announced, and recent news suggests the project is moving forward.

The Split Fiction movie script is complete

After a competitive bidding process, Amazon MGM Studios has secured the rights to make a film based on Split Fiction. Jon M. Chu, the director of Wicked, will helm the project, and Sydney Sweeney will star in it.

Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, known for their work on films like Zombieland and Deadpool, have finished the first draft of the script. This was based on material adapted from the game’s director, Josef Fares.

At the Guldbagge Awards, Fares told Moviezine (via their Instagram) that he received a first draft of the script but remains skeptical. He explained his usual approach is to ‘believe it when I see it,’ indicating he’ll wait to see concrete progress before getting excited.

Feres shared that he’s met with Sydney Sweeney, who is being considered for the lead role in the film. He described her as relaxed and enthusiastic about the project.

Sweeney is currently a very sought-after actress in Hollywood. Because she has several projects in the works, like the upcoming Gundam film, when filming actually begins will likely depend on her availability.
