Masters of Universe’s Earth Setting Isn’t The Massive Change You May Think It Is

While it might seem like a big shift, setting a significant portion of the new Masters of the Universe story on Earth is actually a clever decision that connects back to the original cartoon. The trailer for this second live-action version of He-Man, also known as Prince Adam, shows the action will take place in both Eternia and on our planet.

Although the classic He-Man cartoons might lead you to expect a story entirely set in a fantasy world, this movie is doing something different. In this version, He-Man lives on Earth as a regular person, completely unaware of his origins on the planet Eternia.

This new take on He-Man is quite different from past stories, but it’s not a complete departure. While this specific plot point is new to the movie, it actually draws inspiration from the original 1980s animated series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

He-Man Wasn’t Sent To Earth in The Cartoon, But It Could Have Happened

The trailer for Masters of the Universe shows Prince Adam was sent to Earth by his mother to protect him from enemies, likely Skeletor and his forces. She hoped they wouldn’t be able to find him on Earth. This wasn’t part of the original cartoon, but it still fits with the overall story.

Earth is actually part of the world of He-Man. It’s where Prince Adam’s mother, Queen Marlena, originally came from. The old cartoon from the 1980s explained that Queen Marlena was an astronaut who lived on Earth. After a problem with a space mission, she ended up stranded on Eternia and eventually became the wife of King Randor.

Given Queen Marlena’s history, it’s understandable why she’d consider her home a safe place to hide He-Man if he were ever in danger. That’s why his current situation in the new Masters of the Universe feels natural for these characters.

This new approach lets Masters of the Universe tell a fresh story for its characters while still respecting the original series. This allows the reboot to feel both new and familiar, delivering on the promise of a fun, nostalgic experience packed with references and classic sword-and-sorcery action for He-Man fans.
