Charlie Hunnam’s Outlaw Drama Sons of Anarchy That Hasn’t Been Matched Becomes a PVOD Hit Again 12 Years Later

While Charlie Hunnam found success with Monster: The Ed Gein Story in 2025, his most popular show is now poised to become a leading title on a major streaming service.

According to FlixPatrol, the TV show Sons of Anarchy is now fifth most popular on iTunes’ VOD list. The show recently climbed four spots, surpassing titles like The American Revolution and Euphoria.

I first discovered Sons of Anarchy when it came out, and it quickly became a huge hit. The show boasts an amazing cast, with Charlie Hunnam playing Jax Teller as the central figure. Katey Sagal is incredible as Jax’s mother, Gemma Teller Morrow, and the story also heavily features Jax’s father, John Teller, who was one of the founders of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club – the whole series really centers around them.

Charlie Hunnam led the cast of Sons of Anarchy, which also included Ron Perlman as Clay Morrow, Kim Coates as Tig Trager, Theo Rossi as Juice Ortiz, Tommy Flanagan as Chibs Telford, Mark Boone Junior as Bobby Elvis, and Ryan Hurst as Opie Winston. Throughout the show’s run, many other actors made appearances, including Titus Welliver, Henry Rollins, and Danny Trejo.

During its seven seasons on FX, Sons of Anarchy aired 92 episodes and consistently received excellent reviews. Currently, the show has an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences give it a 91% score.

The Legacy of Sons of Anarchy — Explained

Just four years after the original show ended in 2018, a new series allowed fans to revisit that world. This time, the story focused on the Mayans, a rival motorcycle club, and was set over two years later in a different location, hundreds of miles away.

When Mayans M.C. first came out, most critics liked it, but it didn’t become as popular as the show it spun off from. Currently, audiences give it a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter.” Only the first two seasons have enough reviews from critics to earn positive “Fresh” ratings – 72% for the first season and 100% for the second.

After the show Sons of Anarchy finished, many fans were eager for a prequel series showing how the club first started, something creator Kurt Sutter had previously hinted at.

Look, I get why Disney had to make a change with Mayans M.C.. Kurt Sutter, the show’s creator, apparently had a reputation for being difficult – consistently unprofessional, even abrasive – and after Disney bought 20th Century Fox, they finally pulled the plug on him as showrunner. It was a tough decision, but ultimately, it felt like they had no choice.

Sutter recently created a series featuring Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey. Unfortunately, Netflix has decided not to renew the show for a second season.
