The 2026 TV season began in early January with new shows on ABC, NBC, and Fox, but CBS’s popular programs haven’t returned yet. The first half of Boston Blue‘s first season ended with a dramatic cliffhanger last fall, and the show was quickly renewed for a second season. However, that was weeks ago, so fans who want to revisit the series are currently limited to rewatching old episodes on Paramount+ while they wait for the winter premiere.
With fresh information about the first episode of the 2026 season and insights from the show’s creators, let’s discuss when the Blue Bloods spin-off will return on Fridays.

When Boston Blue Will Be Back
Fans of Boston Blue can expect the show to return to CBS on Friday, February 27th at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. It will air after Sheriff Country at 8 p.m. and Fire Country at 9 p.m. Good news for fans of all three shows – CBS has renewed them through the 2026-2027 television season. Boston Blue’s delayed return, like that of FBI, is due to coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics, which run from February 6th to February 22nd.
The network recently shared a brief description of the winter premiere, titled “Hard Truths.” It reveals what happens after the shocking fall finale, where Jonah was shown standing over the body of Ronan Flaherty—the man responsible for his father’s death—holding a gun. Here’s a preview:
With Ben’s killer now free, Jonah battles with anger and sadness, leading to tense confrontations and straining his relationships with family. Mae and Sarah are forced to confront difficult truths that could alter their lives forever. At the same time, Danny and Lena take on a challenging case that reveals hidden secrets and pushes them to work with unexpected allies.
We still have a lot of questions about what’s coming in the winter premiere, especially regarding Danny and Lena’s important new case. Will it connect to Jonah, or will they work on something completely different? It seems certain that Danny will accept Sarah’s job offer and join the Boston Police Department instead of returning to the NYPD, and the show’s creators have offered some hints about this.

Danny’s “Reason” For Staying In Boston, According To The Showrunners
Following Brandon Sonnier’s explanation of how important Silver family dinners are – mirroring the iconic Reagan family dinners in Blue Bloods – co-showrunner Brandon Margolis discussed the challenge of figuring out why Danny Reagan would ever move away from his life in New York City and start over. He shared with TopMob:
Throughout the season, we explored how Danny Reagan would adjust to transferring from the NYPD to the Boston PD, both professionally and personally. We decided the only compelling reason for him to leave New York, and ultimately stay in Boston, would be family. Initially, that connection was with his son, who is also a police officer. However, the moment we knew he was truly settling in was when he acknowledged the Silvers as family too – a family he’s actively chosen.
Danny originally came to Boston because of Sean, but now he has other reasons to stay. He quickly felt like part of Lena’s family, and after sharing just a few meals with them, he found a new sense of belonging in Massachusetts.
At the end of the first season’s finale, Danny told Lena he might need the Boston police badge. According to co-showrunner Brandon Margolis, Danny wasn’t joking – he genuinely meant he would be requesting it.
When Danny realizes Jonah might be investigated and the Silvers can’t handle it, he knows he still can. However, to take charge, he needs to be an active detective again, meaning he needs his Boston PD badge. This is when he decides to commit to staying, not just for his son, but for the entire family the Silvers have created for them. They need his help now more than ever, and he’s determined to provide it.
Even though Danny and the Silvers aren’t close, Danny’s a Reagan from New York, which means he’s uniquely positioned to investigate the case involving Jonah – a case Lena, Sarah, and Mae likely can’t handle. It’s unclear if Sean will be able to help; while he’s not a Silver by family, his partnership with Jonah could create complications.
Jonah’s already made a difficult situation worse by seeking revenge on his father’s killer. Although it’s likely he didn’t intentionally murder Ronan, the circumstances weren’t helpful. He was found covered in blood, standing over the body with a gun, and he clearly had a strong reason to want the man dead, making him look guilty.
Danny faces a tough challenge trying to help the Silvers by ensuring a fair investigation of Jonah.

More Reagans Are On The Way
Even though the new season of Blue Bloods isn’t here for a few weeks, and we won’t get answers to the fall finale’s cliffhanger involving Jonah, Danny, and the Silvers just yet, fans of Donnie Wahlberg might be happy to know there are hints connecting the show to his earlier work on CBS.
Although it’s unlikely Tom Selleck will reprise his role as Frank Reagan after the show’s end, three actors from the original series are expected to appear in the later episodes of Season 1.
Bridget Moynahan will be back for another episode of Boston Blue. She first appeared alongside Donnie Wahlberg in the show’s premiere, and TVLine reports she’ll be in Episode 17, which is scheduled to air in May. Her character initially welcomed Danny’s move to Boston and his dinners with the Silvers, but circumstances have changed, and Danny now intends to stay. The question is, will her support continue as things evolve?
According to Matt’s Inside Line, Len Cariou, who famously played Henry Reagan on all fourteen seasons of Blue Bloods, will be in Episode 13. Additionally, Marisa Ramirez is returning as Detective Maria Baez in Episode 15. I’m especially excited to see Baez back, considering her romance with Danny developed between the end of Blue Bloods and Boston Blue.
Before Danny committed to his relationship with BPD, a long-distance dynamic seemed possible. Now, it’s unclear if their relationship will survive his decision. I’m curious to see how fans of both Blue Bloods and Boston Blue feel about Danny and Baez. Those who’ve followed the shows for a long time know the history between them, but newer viewers might not understand why this relationship is so meaningful.
I’m really excited for when the whole cast of Blue Bloods gets back together, but right now, I’m completely hooked on figuring out what happens after that shocking cliffhanger in the fall finale – especially how it affects Jonah! Mark your calendars: the winter premiere of Blue Bloods is coming to CBS on Friday, February 27th at 10 p.m. Eastern, and if you miss it, it’ll be available to stream on Paramount+ the next day. Plus, you can binge-watch the entire series on Paramount+ whenever you want!
