Robert Moreno, a Spanish football manager recently fired by FC Sochi, has denied claims that he relied on artificial intelligence to make important team choices, following accusations from his previous supervisor.
Artificial intelligence has long been important in many different industries. For example, it’s been used in car manufacturing for years, and is increasingly helping teams and players in sports through data analysis.
Okay, so I’ve been hearing a lot about this – apparently, even football coaches are using tools like ChatGPT now! They’re using it to help plan practices and figure out how they can improve as coaches. And get this – some pro coaches are even admitting they’ve used it to get ideas on how to approach a game and what strategies might work best. It’s kinda wild to think about, but it seems like AI is starting to creep into all areas of life, even sports!
Robert Moreno, a Spanish manager recently fired by FC Sochi in August, was accused by the team’s CEO, Andrei Orlov, of relying on ChatGPT for all major choices.
Robert Moreno responds to claims he used AI to do everything
According to coach Orlov, he questioned Robert about the team’s schedule, asking when the players would get to sleep. Ultimately, they ended up using a plan generated by ChatGPT. Orlov explained to La Razón that the AI had instructed the players to stay awake for a full 28 hours. He sees AI as a helpful resource, but felt Robert relied on ChatGPT too heavily.
According to Orlov, Moreno used AI to pick his team, make their plans for travel and accommodation.
Moreno denied the claims, stating, “I’ve never used ChatGPT or any other AI to get ready for games, pick the starting team, or select players,” as he told La Razón.
Our coaching team, like all professional teams, uses tools such as video analysis, data, and scouting reports to gather information. However, the final decisions about the game and players are always made by the coach and their staff, based on their expertise and judgment.
I was shocked to hear that FC Sochi fired their coach, Robert Moreno! Apparently, he was using ChatGPT to come up with tactics. It’s wild to think a coach would rely on AI like that. And honestly, with only 22 wins in 66 games, maybe it wasn’t working out anyway! It’s a really strange situation, but definitely a first for me as a football fan.

The report stated that Moreno signed a forward, Arthur Shushenachev, after receiving recommendations from artificial intelligence.
The manager also dismissed the idea that the player was signed based on data alone. He explained that the signing was a decision made by the club, with the Sporting Director taking the lead and the coach giving final approval.
