A Costco apartment block is being built in Los Angeles

A new Costco is coming to Los Angeles with a unique feature: it will have 800 apartments built right on top of the store.

You know, when I think about what makes an apartment great, I usually picture things like a nice pool or a gym. But honestly? Imagine how amazing it would be to have a Costco right there in your building! That would be a total game-changer.

So, I just heard about this crazy new Costco opening in Baldwin Hills, LA! Apparently, they’re building it as part of this huge apartment complex. Costco will be on the ground floor, which is awesome, but get this – they’re putting 800 apartments right on top of it. Talk about convenient grocery shopping!

That’s right – technically, you could walk right downstairs and instantly be enjoying a double chocolate chunk cookie from the amazing Costco food court.

Would you live above a Costco?

Building is scheduled to start in Fall 2025 and is expected to be completed in about two and a half years. This means people could potentially be living near the new Costco by 2028.

A new development will add 800 apartments to the area. Of those, 184 will be designated for low-income residents. The remaining apartments will be offered at prices affordable to households earning 30%, 50%, and 80% of the area’s median income, as reported by Housing Finance.

This project is predicted to generate as many as 400 new jobs locally, and because Costco often hires from the surrounding community, many of these positions are likely to be filled by residents.

As a local, I was so thrilled when Brenda Ashby, from the Crenshaw Manor Community Association, announced back in 2024 that this new grocery store was happening! She really hit the nail on the head when she said it was a game changer for us and a big boost for the neighborhood. Honestly, we’ve been waiting for a good grocery store nearby for ages, so we were all super excited to finally have quality food so close to home.

In 2025, Ben Shaoul, founder of Thrive Living, noted that their project was the first in the country to feature Costco as a main attraction.

It’s still unclear when the public will be able to express interest in these properties, but demand could be high if the Costco family decides to move.
