To combat a growing number of dangerous bear encounters, Japan is now using drones as part of its efforts to keep people safe.

Rural towns and villages in Japan are starting to use drones to keep bears away from homes and businesses, according to TBS News Dig. These drones are equipped with features like speakers, bright lights, and even pepper spray to frighten the bears and encourage them to stay away from people.

This action comes after a year with a record number of bear sightings in towns and neighborhoods. Bears are increasingly entering these areas due to loss of habitat and a lack of food, bringing them into closer contact with people.

Japan to use drones in fight against bears

A memorable test of the drone’s abilities took place in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. Officials used a person dressed as a bear to see how well the drone could perform.

The funny demonstration featured a drone flying above, then quickly spraying bear spray downward. This showed how the system can safely deter animals without risking human contact.

Japan’s Environment Ministry has cautioned that bear attacks are happening more often than ever before. In recent years, there have been many serious injuries and, sadly, several deaths, especially during the busiest times for bear activity.

The increasing number of bear sightings has led to unusual responses from officials. These include asking children to make noise while walking to school by carrying plastic bottles, and even using the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to monitor and manage bear activity in the impacted areas.

Researchers recently developed an AI system that can forecast where and when bears are likely to appear near communities, helping local officials prepare and respond proactively.

Although drone technology is still being tested, Japanese officials believe it could be a valuable long-term answer to challenges like an aging population, fewer licensed hunters, and increasingly unpredictable wildlife behavior.
