For a while now, Blizzard has been taking steps to restrict the use of addons in World of Warcraft. Players have relied on these tools for helpful information and assistance over the game’s 20-year history, but their capabilities are now much more limited.
Addons are becoming obsolete
The developer recently announced today’s update, which is designed to get World of Warcraft ready for the upcoming Midnight expansion in March. Buried within the extensive list of changes was a small mention of adjustments to add-ons.
We’ve updated how UI addons work in Midnight, primarily to restrict their ability to automatically handle combat for players. These changes significantly limit automation in combat.
Okay, so with the new update dropping, a bunch of my favorite addons are probably going to break or need some changes. Basically, they won’t be able to show me battle info like they used to, because Blizzard is building that right into the game now. Luckily, Blizzard gave addon creators a heads-up, and some of them are already working on updated versions that should work with everything!

The transition might be a little bumpy at first, but this change is expected to significantly improve things for World of Warcraft. Previously, using addons gave players a noticeable edge. Now, according to game director Ion Hazzikostas, addons are intended to be an optional enhancement rather than a necessity.
If someone asks if gaming addons are necessary, you could say they’re great for personalizing your gameplay, but aren’t essential to enjoy the game.
Blizzard will now only support addons that affect gameplay and combat. Addons that change how things look or help with accessibility won’t be changed.
