Jagex, the company behind the long-running online game RuneScape, is starting a year-long update of the 25-year-old game. The first change they’re making is getting rid of a much-criticized system where players randomly ‘draw’ for in-game items.
Treasure Hunter, a system for buying in-game advantages with real money, launched in 2014 as a replacement for a similar system. However, players voted to remove it in late 2025. Jagex, the game developer, described this as the first move towards making game progress feel more earned and less reliant on chance.
After celebrating its 25th anniversary on January 4th, Jagex announced its plans for RuneScape in 2026 on January 19th. The plans include both fresh new content and a major effort to update older parts of the game, a project they’re calling the “Road to Restoration.”
RuneScape 2026 roadmap explained
The plan includes both fresh content and monthly improvements to make the experience better.
We’ve been working on several improvements, including a better user interface, adjustments to make the beginning of the game more enjoyable for new players, and visual enhancements to areas that currently resemble their original look from Old School RuneScape.
The year will end with the release of the second part of the Havenhythe boss battle, plus a new feature letting players customize their experience with plugins – much like you can in Old School RuneScape.

To mark a fresh start for RuneScape, Jagex has launched a new logo and is hosting an event to celebrate the game’s 25th anniversary. Until January 31, 2026, players can earn unique versions of skill mastery capes and other cosmetic items.
Old School RuneScape (OSRS), which has surpassed the original RuneScape in popularity, will reveal its future update plans on January 25th during the game’s Winter Summit.
