Valve has updated its rules about how game developers use artificial intelligence. Instead of requiring studios to say if they used AI tools during development, Valve now focuses on whether the game includes content created by AI.
Valve seems to have changed its stance on AI development tools, as noted by Simon Carless on LinkedIn. They now indicate they aren’t worried about developers using AI to improve their workflow, stating that increased efficiency from these tools isn’t a concern. This includes things like AI-created meeting summaries and code assistance programs, which are now common in programming.
Valve has announced a new policy to let players know when AI is used to create content—everything from promotional materials to items within games. Developers can now mark which assets were AI-generated and also indicate, with a simple check, if players will directly encounter this AI-created content – like images, sounds, or other in-game elements – while playing.
Valve has recently updated its rules about telling players when games use artificial intelligence – it’s the first major change since the rules were introduced in 2024 as AI became more common in game development. Currently, developers choose whether or not to share this information, and Valve doesn’t actively check for it, meaning some games may not mention AI use. This approach differs from stores like the Epic Games Store, where CEO Tim Sweeney believes these disclosures aren’t necessary.
Artificial intelligence remains a hot topic in the gaming industry, especially following successes in 2025. The use of AI-created audio in the popular game Arc Raiders sparked a lot of conversation. More recently, Larian Studios, the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3, faced criticism when their CEO mentioned potentially using AI in the early stages of their next game, Divinity. They quickly clarified that they wouldn’t be doing so, but confirmed they are still considering AI for future projects.
