Whether the Duffer Brothers really used ChatGPT to write Stranger Things season 5 has officially been answered. In the new documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, streaming on Netflix, eagle-eyed viewers claim to have spotted one of the Duffers with ChatGPT tabs open on their computer while they were writing a script for the final season.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, documentary director Martina Radwan was asked if the Duffer Brothers had ever used ChatGPT while she was around. While she wasn’t sure if one of them actually had the program open, she believes “everyone” uses it for “quick research.”
Radwan kept questioning if ChatGPT was actually running on their computer, but then pointed out that all writers rely on “tools,” like iPhones, especially when juggling multiple tasks. When directly asked if she’d ever seen anyone misuse AI tools in the writers’ room, Radwan firmly answered, “No, of course not.” You can read her complete statement below.
It makes me wonder if they even used ChatGPT at all. A lot of people online are guessing, but it seems odd. Doesn’t everyone use it for quick fact-checking these days? I just can’t see how you could realistically write a story with so many characters using ChatGPT – it doesn’t make sense to me.
To start, no one has definitively shown that it was accessible during filming. It’s similar to having a phone nearby while working – we often use these tools while doing other things, and there’s always a lot happening at once. What’s really upsetting is that everyone enjoys the show, yet now people are focusing on finding flaws.
Absolutely not. What I saw was a really dynamic creative process – a true back-and-forth of ideas and conversation. People often imagine a ‘writers room’ as just people writing, but it’s so much more about developing the story together. You explore different ideas, then bring it all back to the script. Being a part of that process is a real privilege and something I’m very grateful for.
As Radwan points out, looking at individual moments from the documentary doesn’t prove whether one of the Duffer brothers was using ChatGPT. However, the filmmaker states that she never saw them use any AI tools while she was filming.
Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about whether the creators of Stranger Things used AI to help write the new season, but honestly, I don’t think most people actually believe they did. It feels like the whole thing is really about a bigger worry – a lot of us are just uneasy about AI being used in filmmaking in general, and this just brought it all to the surface. It’s less about the Duffer brothers and more about where Hollywood is heading, you know?
As Radwan points out, many people, particularly writers, are now using ChatGPT for fast research and to help with their work. The problem arises when generative AI is used unethically in a writing process – something that didn’t happen with season 5 of Stranger Things.
