The copy of Action Comics #1 that sold at auction for $15 million to an anonymous bidder.Selling for $15 million, this copy of Action Comics #1 has become the most expensive comic book ever sold, breaking the previous record. Its excellent condition – graded 9.0 by CGC – was a key reason for the high price, as it’s one of the best-preserved copies of this issue.
Nicolas Cage, a lifelong comic book enthusiast who adopted his stage name in honor of the Marvel character Luke Cage, purchased this comic in the 1990s. It was later stolen but recovered in 2011 from a storage unit. Cage then auctioned it off for $2.2 million that same year.
According to CGC President Matt Nelson, the high price of this sale demonstrates both how rare the book is and how significant it is in history. He explained that Superman was the very first superhero, and this particular comic, Action Comics #1, is the most recognizable and important comic book ever created.
