Jennifer Lawrence shared that an incident where a dog bit her son significantly altered her feelings towards dogs, joking that she wanted to get rid of them all.
At a January 7th event in New York City, after a showing of her new film Die, My Love, the Academy Award-winning actress discussed how having children changed her perspective on animals, especially dogs.
Lawrence, age 35, rehomed her dog, Princess Pippi Longstocking (who she adopted in 2017), to her parents after having children. She and her husband, Cooke Maroney, have two sons, including a three-year-old named Cy.
Lawrence and her former dog Princess Pippi Longstocking“I just see them as a threat”
After becoming a mother, Jennifer Lawrence developed a strong fear of dogs, viewing them as potential threats almost automatically. She explained that it feels like she’s seeing dogs differently now, no longer recognizing them as friendly animals.
The actress explained what happened: her son had been bitten by a dog. She admitted that in the moment, she felt incredibly upset and even had an extreme thought about wanting to get rid of all dogs. She then jokingly launched into a very dramatic and over-the-top description of her feelings, all meant as a humorous exaggeration.
The comments drew laughter from the crowd, though the language was intentionally extreme.
Lawrence explained that a difficult experience with a dog led her to decide against owning one again. She doesn’t want to risk the heartache of losing another canine companion and has happily become a cat person instead. She now shares her home with Fred, a cat she describes as clever and funny.
Lawrence feels cats are often misunderstood, and she particularly enjoys their tendency to act distant. She playfully described her cat, Fred, as someone who seems to appear in rooms as if by accident.
