Following the indefinite suspension of *Jimmy Kimmel Live!*, David Letterman expressed concern about the future of late-night television. Speaking with *The Atlantic*’s Jeffrey Goldberg, Letterman described Kimmel’s suspension as “misery” and warned that this kind of censorship is likely to spread. He believes this is just the beginning, suggesting that increasingly controlled media, particularly under an authoritarian administration, will eventually impact everyone. Letterman, who retired from late-night television in 2015, feels strongly that firing someone due to fear or attempts to appease those in power is unacceptable and a dangerous precedent.
ABC put *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* on indefinite hold after the FCC chairman criticized Kimmel’s remarks about Charlie Kirk. Following this, two major television station groups, Sinclair (185 stations) and Nexstar (197 stations), announced they would stop broadcasting Kimmel’s show, which led to the suspension. Nexstar stated they “strongly object” to Kimmel’s comments regarding Charlie Kirk’s death and will replace the show with other programs on their ABC stations.
During his show on September 15th, Jimmy Kimmel argued that some conservatives seemed to be downplaying the shooter’s potential connection to the MAGA movement. He also offered his sympathy for the death of Kirk and voiced his dismay at the reactions to it. Kimmel explained that the tragedy has heightened tensions and revealed shockingly hateful responses from across the political divide, with some people even celebrating the death – something he found incomprehensible.
