After Alan Arkin won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2007 for Little Miss Sunshine, Eddie Murphy left the ceremony, and some reports claimed he stormed out because he was upset about losing. However, for nearly two decades, Murphy has clarified that wasn’t the case. He explained to Entertainment Weekly that people kept approaching him to offer sympathy, even celebrities like Clint Eastwood, and he simply didn’t want to be the focus of pity all night. He wasn’t angry, just wanted to avoid the awkwardness. Footage of the moment Arkin was announced shows Murphy appeared nervous – which he admits is understandable, as being an Oscar nominee is a stressful experience – but respectful.
Murphy wasn’t at all surprised that Alan Arkin won, as he’d been a fan of the performance. He recalled seeing Little Miss Sunshine six months before its release at a private screening with Jeff Katzenberg. Even before his own nomination, Murphy told Katzenberg that Arkin’s performance was the kind that could win an Oscar – and, as Murphy jokingly pointed out, it ended up winning his.
