Stranger Things Season 5 finale hides Eddie Easter egg that has fans “bawling”

If you were already feeling emotional after the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, you might be interested to know there’s a subtle tribute to the beloved character Eddie Munson (played by Joseph Quinn) hidden within the episode.

Eddie Munson, the metal-loving leader of the Hellfire Club who debuted in Season 4, quickly won over fans. Sadly, he bravely sacrificed himself to protect his friends from Vecna.

He bravely used loud heavy metal music to divert Vecna’s swarm of Demobats, but sadly, this act of courage cost him his life. Throughout the fifth and final season, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) has been particularly devastated by his loss.

Okay, so I just finished the final episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix, and it was intense! They really gave Eddie a great send-off in that last battle with Vecna, which was awesome. But honestly, there’s this one little detail I just noticed that hit me way harder than I expected. Fair warning, I’m about to spoil things, so if you haven’t watched it yet, stop reading!

Stranger Things Season 5 pays tribute to Eddie Munson

During his graduation speech, Dustin unexpectedly changed the mood. He dramatically took off his robe to reveal a Hellfire Club t-shirt, but also grabbed his diploma from Principal Higgins and flipped him off – a rebellious act originally planned by Eddie.

In Season 4 of Stranger Things, Eddie delivers a powerful speech in the school cafeteria, claiming that the pressure to fit in – conformity – is the true villain plaguing Hawkins.

He tells his friends that if he graduates, he’ll proudly walk across the stage, give Principal Higgins a defiant gesture, grab his diploma, and leave as quickly as possible.

Dustin kicks things off with a heartfelt speech, acknowledging the friends in the audience and celebrating the end of a difficult period he refers to as “chaos.”

However, the atmosphere changes when he calls Higgins “old-fashioned,” and he dramatically throws off his graduation gown to show off a Hellfire Club t-shirt, accompanied by the start of Iron Maiden’s song ‘The Trooper’.

So, things got crazy when Higgins tried to pull me off stage. I just blurted out, “Forget school, forget the rules, forget trying to fit in!” It felt like a tribute to Eddie, you know? The crowd went wild! Then I grabbed my diploma and finished what Eddie started, carrying out his plan to the end.

Many viewers of Stranger Things noticed a funny moment, and one shared it on Reddit. They explained that during Dustin’s graduation scene, he playfully flipped off the principal, grabbed his diploma, and quickly left.

Eddie was plotting his graduation day revenge in the cafeteria. He declared he’d walk across the stage, make direct eye contact with Principal Higgins, give him a rude gesture, grab his diploma, and then make a quick escape.

The post has gotten a lot of comments, and one person pointed out a hidden detail, saying it was a “fantastic tribute to Eddie the Banished.” Another commenter quickly realized the reference, noting the character did exactly as Eddie had predicted.

The emotional finale left many viewers in tears. One person shared, “I’m crying even more now! That was incredible!” Another simply wrote, “I’m getting teary-eyed all over again – the finale was just too good.”

Someone else noted that the music playing was Iron Maiden’s ‘The Trooper’ from their album Piece of Mind – the same album the mascot Eddie was holding up while proclaiming, ‘This is music!’

Yes, Eddie never got to walk that stage, but Dustin made damn sure his plan did.

The final season of Stranger Things is now available on Netflix. If you’ve finished watching, you can find out who doesn’t make it to the end and what the season’s conclusion entails.
