As a huge MCU fan, I’ve loved watching Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts since Iron Man – she’s been a fantastic counterpart to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark! She’s been in seven Marvel movies total, which is amazing. It’s funny though, she’s also famously a little out of the loop about the MCU, like when she forgot she was in Spider-Man: Homecoming! So, when someone recently asked her what Pepper had been up to since Avengers: Endgame, her answer was perfectly… well, her. It totally fit her personality!
At the end of Endgame (available on Disney+), Pepper attended Tony Stark’s funeral alongside their daughter, Morgan, and close friends like James Rhodes and Happy Hogan, as well as many of Tony’s superhero colleagues. Six and a half years after the film’s release – and about the same amount of time passing within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Gwyneth Paltrow, the star of Marty Supreme, shared her thoughts on where Pepper is now in an interview on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast. She mentioned needing to rewatch all the Avengers movies to fully understand Pepper’s current storyline, but then offered her speculation:
She’s balancing motherhood with her career, likely handling finances and perhaps serving on committees or offering professional guidance. She might also be exploring her personal life and dating.
That makes sense. Morgan was born right after Thanos eliminated half of all life, meaning she was five years old by the time of Avengers: Endgame. Now, she’d probably be in middle school, and her mom, Pepper Potts, would be juggling parenting with running Stark Industries. It’s been long enough that Pepper might be starting to date again, but it’s hard to imagine anyone could match Tony’s personality.
That answer seemed okay at first, but Gwyneth Paltrow quickly showed she wasn’t very familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she started talking about Pepper Potts’ love life. She couldn’t recall what happened with Robert Downey Jr.’s character in the movies, and said:
Or did they bring Robert back to life? I don’t know. I can’t keep track.
Gwyneth Paltrow jokingly noted that things are back to normal with Robert Downey Jr. as he’s set to reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as Doctor Doom in the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday. While it’s unclear if this version of Doom is connected to a Tony Stark variant or is a completely new character, it won’t be the Tony Stark fans followed for over a decade. Paltrow doesn’t expect to be involved in the movie, and likely won’t keep track of the details.
Marvel is famous for keeping secrets, so it’s possible Gwyneth Paltrow might unexpectedly appear in a future Avengers film. Even if she doesn’t appear in the upcoming Doomsday movie, she could return in Avengers: Secret Wars (scheduled for 2027) or another Marvel project. Regardless, it’s unlikely Paltrow is currently concerned with what happens to her character, Pepper Potts, unless she’s offered a paycheck for it.
