Concept art for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie showed some wild ideas for how Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman, would use her powers. She’s generally considered the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four, thanks to her ability to become invisible, control cosmic energy, and create powerful force fields. We’ve already seen her incredible abilities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like when she managed to hold back Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, as he approached New York City.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was flipping through the art book for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it was fascinating to see how much thought went into Sue Storm’s powers! Concept artist Wes Burt revealed they really spent a lot of time brainstorming different ways to visually represent her force fields and invisibility – they weren’t settling for the obvious, and I love seeing that kind of creative exploration.
We spent a lot of time figuring out how to show Sue’s powers on screen in a completely new way. I really wanted the visual effects to feel like something they would have created back in the 1960s, but using all the amazing tools we have with modern CGI. It was about capturing that classic vibe with a contemporary look.
Burt specifically mentioned that artists Austin Briggs (known for his work on Flash Gordon) and Coby Whitmore influenced how he designed Sue’s powers.

The artist working on the Marvel Cinematic Universe explained that early ideas for Sue Storm’s powers showed them as appearing on surfaces like glass or marble, leading to some interesting visual concepts.
I envisioned her force field in a few different ways. Sometimes I imagined it as a transparent layer, like glass or marble – something we could easily create with 3D technology now. Other times, I thought about representing it with abstract patterns of colored light, using RGB values. I also considered how the force field would appear physically, wanting to visually connect it to her emotions and show it originating from her heart.

These energy shields might be a little too similar in appearance to the diamond form often used by the X-Men’s Emma Frost.

Director Matt Shakman, likely to return for the sequel to The Fantastic Four, aimed to find a fresh take on the team’s powers, moving beyond the typical and often-used visual of a simple protective bubble.
Sue has some really unique abilities. I didn’t want to rely on the typical force field – it’s been done a lot in the comics already. I was aiming for something fresh and different.

Shakman has often said that Stanley Kubrick’s film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, was a major influence on First Steps. He even thought about how Kubrick would approach the powers given to the character Sue while developing the story.
We were inspired by the visual style of 1960s films, aiming for effects that looked realistic and were captured directly in camera. I kept asking myself how Stanley Kubrick would approach a character with these abilities. We explored how to portray this power through emotion, comedy, and drama, but the emotionally driven scenes resonated with me the strongest.

Of all her teammates in the Fantastic Four, Baker focused particularly on finding ways for her character to connect and collaborate with Johnny Storm, played by Joseph Quinn.
I wondered how she and Johnny could coordinate their powers. Perhaps she creates a shield with a special design, and then the Human Torch directs his flames through the openings to hit several targets at once.

Unfortunately, the Fantastic Four didn’t often show the team working together seamlessly. The closest the movie came to realizing that potential was a scene where Sue lifted a section of train tracks while Johnny used his flames to repair them.

The Invisible Woman wasn’t the only character with alternate designs in The Fantastic Four. A new art book revealed four additional powers that were considered for Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards. Although these ideas weren’t used in the first film, fans are wondering if they might appear in a future Avengers movie, potentially Avengers: Doomsday.

One of the most talked-about aspects of the Summer 2025 movie, The Fantastic Four, was its striking visual style. While the final look was praised, some fans believe that different designs considered for Sue Storm’s powers might have made her introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe even more impressive.
Why Sue Storm’s Powers Could Be Different in Avengers: Doomsday
By the start of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, and her super-powered family have already been fighting crime as heroes for four years. Because of a time jump at the end of the movie, when they appear in Avengers: Doomsday, they will have been heroes for over eight years.
In the upcoming movie Doomsday, audiences will see a more seasoned Storm grapple with the team’s biggest and most emotionally charged crisis yet. The story reveals that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom plans to kidnap Franklin Richards, intending to use him as a powerful weapon in the upcoming battle across the multiverse.
Sue Storm’s powers might appear somewhat changed in the upcoming movies Doomsday and Secret Wars. Because the Avengers films will be directed by the Russo Brothers instead of Matt Shakman, they could decide to present her abilities in a new way.
