There’s a lot of excitement about the 2026 movie Avengers: Doomsday, but it’s easy to overlook how significant Avengers: Secret Wars will be when it comes out in 2027. These two films are planned as a connected story, much like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were in 2018 and 2019. Together, Doomsday and Secret Wars will create a massive crossover event that will be incredibly difficult to top, and Marvel likely won’t be able to replicate its scale for many years.
The upcoming movie Avengers: Secret Wars will conclude the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, the main storyline that began after Endgame. Although not every project in this saga has directly involved traveling to different universes, the idea of the multiverse has been a major focus in recent Marvel films and TV shows. While this approach has allowed for unexpected returns of characters, Secret Wars pushes the concept so far that it will be difficult to continue using it in the future.

The cast of Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be huge, bringing back many familiar faces – even actors from older Marvel movies that predate the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’re expecting to see a significant presence from the cast of the X-Men films, originally produced by Fox. While it hasn’t been officially announced, most fans would be surprised if those characters don’t also appear in Secret Wars. Disney might be saving other established characters for the 2027 Secret Wars movie, suggesting that film could have an even more spectacular cast.
After Avengers: Secret Wars, the MCU will likely have used up most of its popular characters for returns and cameos. Future crossover events might have to rely on bringing back actors like Thomas Jane as The Punisher (from the 2004 movie) or Jessica Alba as the Invisible Woman (from the early 2000s Fantastic Four films). While those actors weren’t bad in their roles, they don’t generate the same level of excitement as the bigger stars. By that point, Disney would be running out of options, especially since other fan favorites like Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine have already appeared in the main MCU.
Marvel Will Need to Fully Move on After ‘Secret Wars’ in Order To Set up More Great Crossovers in the Future

Marvel Studios
After the huge events planned for Doomsday and Secret Wars, it will be very difficult for Marvel to create even bigger storylines without completely starting over. This means a fresh beginning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with new actors taking on iconic roles like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. With fans expecting massive team-ups in future *Avengersstyle movies, Marvel needs to develop a new team of heroes and villains that can generate the same level of excitement as the original group.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has hinted at a major shift in direction for the MCU. While he’s used the term “reboot,” he acknowledges it can be interpreted in many ways. It’s not yet confirmed whether the current MCU will end and be replaced by a new reality after Secret Wars, but it’s a strong possibility. Feige’s primary aim appears to be establishing one central timeline, instead of constantly jumping between different universes. Simply refocusing on the existing Earth-616 timeline after Secret Wars could lead to inconsistent and forced storylines, similar to what’s happened since Endgame.
Would Anyone Be Safe From Marvel’s Potential Hard Reset After ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, will closely follow the storyline of the popular Marvel comic book series of the same name, where numerous universes are destroyed. It’s likely the 2027 film will feature a similar large-scale destruction. While destroying the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-616) would be a bold move, it would be unforgettable and could provide a suitable conclusion to this era of storytelling. Unless key characters find a way to escape to a different reality, they will likely perish when Earth-616 is eliminated.
Xochitl Gomez’s character, America Chavez, has a strong chance of surviving the destruction of her universe. Because she can travel between different realities, she could simply move to another one.
With the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps set in an alternate reality called Earth-828, Marvel Studios seems to be establishing this new world as a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The characters from that reality were shown traveling to the main MCU timeline (Earth-616) in Thunderbolts, and the actors playing them are confirmed to be in Secret Wars. This suggests that the Fantastic Four will play a role in defeating Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) and then potentially returning to their home dimension. Avengers: Secret Wars could therefore mark the end of the current MCU saga, while also setting the stage for the future of the franchise.
