Console sales dropped significantly in 2025. Compared to the previous year, sales of the Xbox Series X/S fell by 70%, while PlayStation 5 sales decreased by 40%.
A recent report from Circana shows that sales are down for all three leading gaming companies. Nintendo is also experiencing a decrease, with combined sales of the Switch 1 and 2 models falling by 10%.
PlayStation and Xbox Bombed During a Key Sales Month
Wow, November 2025 was a really rough month for console sales – definitely the worst we’ve seen all year! It’s a bit worrying to see hardware sales dropping like this, and it seems like a lot of different things are contributing to the slowdown.
Video game console sales usually go up in November thanks to Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. But in 2025, even with those discounts, sales weren’t as high as expected, likely because consoles cost more than they used to.
In 2025, Xbox received attention for increasing the price of its consoles twice. When the Series X first launched, it cost $499.99, but the price has since jumped to $649.99.
Microsoft’s Game Pass lets players enjoy a wide range of games for a monthly subscription. However, the price of the Game Pass Ultimate plan has gone up by 50%. This price increase could be making Xbox consoles less attractive to potential buyers.
Other gaming companies have also increased the prices of their consoles. When the PlayStation 5 first came out, the Digital Edition cost $400 and the regular version was $500. Although those original models are no longer available, the newer PS5 Slim Digital Edition now costs $500, and the standard PS5 Slim is priced at $550.
Since its release in June, the Nintendo Switch 2 has maintained its original price. However, Nintendo did raise the prices of the older Switch Lite and Switch OLED models by $50 in August. The company has also suggested that the cost of Nintendo Switch Online and its games might go up at some point in the future.
The Video Game Price Hikes Are Caused By Several Factors
Recent price increases are mainly due to tariffs put in place by former President Donald Trump. These tariffs have made importing parts for things like gaming consoles much more expensive. Additionally, the growing popularity of artificial intelligence has caused the price of RAM to go up significantly.
Now that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S have been available for five years, interest was probably starting to fade anyway. But increasing prices may have caused demand to drop even more. Some stores, such as Costco, have…
We’ll have a better understanding when the sales figures for December 2025 are released, but this recent sales decline is concerning for the gaming console industry. It suggests that Xbox and Sony may need to consider releasing new consoles soon.
