Liam Neeson’s Action Thriller Non-Stop Sets January Streaming Release on Starz

This holiday season, Starz is giving movie lovers a thrilling ride with the action film Non-Stop. It’s coming to the platform, but won’t be available for long.

The movie is leaving Netflix on December 31st and will then be available on Starz starting January 1st. However, it won’t stay on Netflix for very long – it’s scheduled to leave the platform almost as quickly as it arrived, becoming unavailable on January 31st.

The film boasts a well-known cast including Liam Neeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Nate Parker, Anson Mount, and Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey. It follows a former NYPD officer who now works as an air marshal as he tries to catch a murderer during a flight from New York to London, and it attracted a large audience.

The action movie made over $222.8 million in theaters, which was a big success considering it cost between $28 and $50 million to make. Despite being a financial hit, Non-Stop received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.

Currently, moviegoers give Non-Stop a middling 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, while critics give it a slightly lower 62% on the Tomatometer. While many reviewers praised Liam Neeson’s performance, several criticized the film’s unbelievable plot.

The Film’s Fight Sequences Are Surprisingly Grounded

Even though the movie’s storyline is a bit over-the-top, the fight scenes were inspired by real-world techniques. Director Jaume Collet-Serra explained to Den of Geek that he spoke with air marshals to make the action feel authentic, focusing on the strategies they’d been trained for but hadn’t yet had to use. He learned that air marshals have a distinctive style of fighting that he incorporated into the film.

The director told me their fighting style is really unique. It’s not about brute force, but more about using pressure points and quick hand movements – things we see in the movie when characters are dealing with unruly passengers, often those who’ve had too much to drink. It’s all about subduing people without causing serious harm, and it’s fascinating to watch how they do it!

Knowing how to convincingly fight on a plane was just one challenge. Getting the fight scene between Liam Neeson, who is 6’4″, and the air marshal played by Mount, Jack Hammond, looking right also took a lot of work – it needed ‘many weeks’ of practice.

He pointed out that despite appearing dynamic, the fight scene was filmed with a completely stationary camera. The sequence, which ended up with around 70 different shots, wasn’t filmed chronologically. Instead, shots were taken whenever it was easiest for the crew and best for the lighting.

When filming the fight scene, we carefully controlled the lighting and camera angles. We removed and replaced walls to achieve the desired look, shooting all the footage from a single direction. The fight itself wasn’t physically performed as it appears on screen; it was created entirely through editing and clever camera work.

Non-Stop is currently available to watch on Netflix through Dec. 31.
