Greendale Community College, the setting for the show Community, wants to distance itself from Chevy Chase‘s version of events. According to documentarian Marina Zenovich, it was very difficult to find anyone from the show willing to participate in her CNN documentary, I’m Chevy Chase, and You’re Not. She told Variety that “everyone said no,” including creator Dan Harmon, whom she briefly connected with. Zenovich eventually got director Jay Chandrasekhar, a member of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, to share his experiences with Chase, and she credits him with saving the project. She says his willingness to speak honestly was crucial.
It’s no surprise that Chevy Chase had conflicts with his co-stars – it’s a well-known pattern. Steve Martin, his former co-star from Amigo, also didn’t participate in a recent documentary about Chase. However, the tension Chase had with the cast of Community has become a central part of his story, especially since he left the show in 2012 after reportedly walking off the set multiple times. Reports indicate clashes arose from racially insensitive jokes and comments directed at and about Donald Glover. Ultimately, his character, Pierce Hawthorne, was written off the show in season 5. When asked about his reputation for difficult behavior in 2022, Chase responded, “I don’t care. I am who I am, and I like who I am.” He added that he’s thought about it a lot and simply doesn’t regret his actions.
