Last year’s movies and TV shows offered a lot of great entertainment, and I definitely enjoyed my share. I even ventured into some pretty unusual and strange content – which I sometimes like, but I watched more of it than usual this year. I want to share six titles I particularly enjoyed and think you’ll like them too.

Friendship Is Very Cringey In All The Right Ways
I’m so excited for Tim Robinson’s new movie, Friendship, coming out in 2025! Knowing his style, it’s going to be brilliantly awkward and funny. It’s about a guy named Craig, played by Tim, who quickly becomes friends with his new neighbor, Austin (Paul Rudd), but then their friendship suddenly falls apart. The movie follows Craig as he really struggles to accept that the friendship is over, and it’s apparently super dark and hilarious to watch. Andrew DeYoung wrote and directed it, and I have a feeling it’s going to be amazing!
This movie from A24, which you can stream with an HBO Max subscription, was both funny and cringeworthy – even when it got really awkward. But beyond that, it’s a really insightful look at the issue of loneliness in men, something a lot of people are talking about these days.

The Vince Staples Show Furthers Its Descent Into Madness And Hilarity
The second season of The Vince Staples Show is now available on Netflix, and it offers a more in-depth look at the main character’s inner life than the first season. Throughout the new episodes, Vince Staples attempts to keep his family united while mourning a loss, and things quickly become complicated – including some unexpected drama at a country club.
While not quite as polished as Donald Glover’s previous show, Atlanta, his new comedy still delivers plenty of laughs and thought-provoking observations about society. Plus, the show is anchored by a genuinely charming central performance.

Freaky Tales Provides Viewers With Exactly What The Title Promises
If you’re in the mood for a quirky and funny movie, check out Freaky Tales. This film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (known for Half Nelson and Captain Marvel), is set in 1987 Oakland, California and weaves together four different, but connected, stories. Expect a truly unusual cast of characters – from punk rock fans battling neo-Nazis to a surprisingly kind criminal, and even an NBA player who’s a master with a katana! (You read that last one right.)
This unusual movie is surprisingly visually impressive and features a great soundtrack. It also has plenty of gore for fans of the genre. With a strong cast including Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Dominique Thorne, and Jay Ellis, it’s worth checking out. Stream it on HBO Max for a strange, nostalgic experience – and keep an eye out for a humorous cameo by Tom Hanks!

The Chair Company Further Solidifies Tim Robinson As A Comedic Force
Though Tim Robinson’s previous show, Friendship, was known for its unpredictable humor, his new HBO series, The Chair Company, takes things to another level. Robinson stars as Ron Trosper, a property manager who uncovers a large-scale conspiracy after a workplace accident involving a chair. This leads him to encounter a cast of suspicious characters and find himself in increasingly chaotic and stressful scenarios.
This show is packed with shocking and bizarre scenes – it often feels surreal, like something you’d experience in a dream. But despite all the craziness, there’s a genuinely intriguing mystery that keeps you hooked, and the plot has a lot of unexpected turns.

A Stressful Journey About The Pitfalls Of Parenthood Awaits In If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
While many films explore the difficulties of raising children, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You stands out as particularly intense. The film, written and directed by Mary Bronstein, focuses on Linda, a therapist played by Rose Byrne, who is overwhelmed trying to care for her ill daughter while her husband is away on business. Essentially, the movie offers a deeply unsettling and anxious portrayal of parenthood, seen through Linda’s eyes. Bronstein also cleverly uses sound design to heighten the sense of unease.
Even though If I Had Legs is an emotionally challenging film, it’s absolutely worth seeing. Bronstein approaches the sensitive topic with care and respect, and the story builds to a truly moving ending. The performances are also excellent, especially from Byrne, ASAP Rocky, and Conan O’Brien, who could definitely take on more dramatic roles.

Pluribus Already Stands As One Of The Oddest (And Most Entertaining) Sci-Fi Shows On TV
I’m really excited about Vince Gilligan’s new show! After creating worlds filled with drug dealers and shady lawyers in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he’s taken a completely different turn. Pluribus is about an alien virus that arrives on Earth and creates this strange, peaceful collective consciousness among people. The story follows Carol Sturka, a writer from Albuquerque (played by Rhea Seehorn, who I loved in Better Call Saul), and she’s one of just thirteen people who aren’t affected by the virus. She’s the only one trying to find a way to stop it.
Simply put, Pluribus is fantastic. The writing is as strong and captivating as you’d expect from a Vince Gilligan production. Rhea Seehorn also delivers a brilliant performance as Carol, who, in many ways, evokes a similar feeling to Walter White’s Heisenberg persona. While it’s less overtly disturbing than some other shows, Pluribus still manages to be deeply unsettling when major events unfold, and those moments really pack a punch.
Some of you might still be unsure about these titles, or hesitant because they seem so strange. But I encourage you to try a few – you might be surprised! Stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing the quirky, funny, and unpredictable nature of these entries will be a rewarding experience. And if you’re looking for more unusual content, be sure to check out the movie and TV schedules for 2026.
