A truck transporting around $400,000 of live lobsters, meant for Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota, was stolen. Federal investigators believe this was a planned cargo theft and are currently investigating.
Rexing Companies, a shipping company in Indiana, reported a shipment missing on Christmas Eve. According to CEO Dylan Rexing, the shipment left Taunton, Massachusetts, but never reached its final destination.
Rexing believes the evidence points to the item being intentionally stolen, not just lost in transit or misdirected.
According to Rexing, the company thinks this hijacking is connected to a larger group stealing valuable cargo, particularly food items that are easy to resell. The FBI is currently investigating, but no one has been arrested yet.

Rexing explained on ChicagoLIVE that cargo theft is a major problem nationwide. He noted that it disrupts supply chains and ultimately leads to higher costs for shoppers.
Rexing explained that, in addition to the stolen seafood, the loss has directly impacted his company. With over 100 employees, Rexing’s Evansville-based business has had to adjust its hiring plans and employee bonuses because of the theft.
Investigators suspect the lobster theft might be part of a larger pattern. Police say another seafood delivery was stolen from the same location in Massachusetts earlier this month, suggesting a possible coordinated effort.
The lobsters that were stolen were headed to various Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota. It’s unknown what condition the lobsters are in now, or where they might end up, but experts say stealing food shipments is on the rise. This is because perishable items can be quickly transported and sold, making them attractive targets.
