Warning: major spoilers for Stranger Things season 5, volume 2.
The final episodes of Stranger Things season 5 pick up right where we left off, with the group from Hawkins still trying to stop Vecna. These episodes reveal some surprising information, including a prediction about Eleven’s future from Kali. After a month-long wait, the rest of Stranger Things season 5 is now available to watch on Netflix.
The second volume continues the story immediately after the first, with Will (Noah Schnapp) using his abilities to help his friends. Meanwhile, the creatures in the Upside Down are still searching for a way to escape. After being rescued from a military base in the Upside Down, Kali joins the group in Hawkins, which worries Hopper (David Harbour).
Eleven and Kali reconnect in the Upside Down, where Kali shares everything she witnessed at the facility. She explains that the only way to end the current threat is for them both to make the ultimate sacrifice, and she believes this to be true.
Kali Believes Eleven Needs To Sacrifice Herself For Everything To End
Kali was almost free from the military base in the Upside Down when she uncovered a disturbing secret. She learned the military was conducting experiments on pregnant women, and the blood they’d been taking from her was being used to try and create more children with special abilities.
It seems Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton) is continuing Dr. Brenner’s (Matthew Modine) research. Just as Brenner used Henry Creel’s blood to create children with powers like Eleven and Kali, Dr. Kay is now trying to do the same using Kali’s blood. Unfortunately, these new experiments aren’t working as planned, so Dr. Kay wants to capture Eleven, who was Brenner’s most successful subject, to use in her research.
Kali warns Eleven that even if they succeed in defeating Vecna and closing the gateway to the Upside Down, other people will likely try to continue Brenner’s experiments as long as Eleven and Kali are still alive.
Kali explains that everyone connected to the Upside Down, including themselves, must be eliminated to stop further experiments, and unfortunately, she’s correct. The only potential solution is to lose their powers, similar to what Eleven experienced in season 3, but even that isn’t a guarantee, as others could potentially restore those abilities.
Why Eleven’s Death Makes Sense For Stranger Things’ Ending
While it would be heartbreaking to see Eleven die in the final season of Stranger Things, it would actually fit the story well. Eleven is responsible for everything that’s happened – she accidentally sent Henry to the Upside Down, which created that alternate dimension and ultimately allowed the Demogorgon to enter our world and kidnap Will.
I’ve always felt that the ultimate showdown between them should happen as the Upside Down finally collapses, and sadly, I think it might mean both of them won’t survive. Everyone keeps guessing that Eleven will make the ultimate sacrifice in the Stranger Things finale, and honestly, while I’d be devastated, it would make a certain tragic sense. Kali’s right, you know? It feels like there’s no other way to truly end the experiments and break the cycle once and for all.
