Google is secretly testing a popular feature for Gmail that would allow users to switch to a different email address while still keeping all their existing data and account information.
This update lets people switch to a new @gmail.com address without losing any of their existing emails, files, or photos. Previously, changing your Gmail address meant creating a new account and painstakingly moving all your data over.
Right now, this feature seems to be available only on Google’s pages for Hindi language support. The way it’s described suggests Google is releasing it slowly, instead of all at once worldwide.
So, it looks like you can actually switch your Gmail address to a different Gmail address if you want! The page says you’re able to change it, as long as the new address also ends in @gmail.com.
However, Google notes that the feature to change your account email isn’t available to everyone yet. They’re slowly releasing it to all users, so you might not see the option immediately.
English language support pages still state that Gmail addresses usually cannot be changed.
If the new feature becomes available to everyone, users who change their Gmail address won’t lose access to their old one. It will still work as a nickname, meaning emails sent to the old address will still arrive in the inbox, and you can continue using it to sign in to Google services like Drive, Maps, and YouTube.
However, there are a few restrictions. If you change the Gmail address linked to your account, you won’t be able to create a new one for a year. Also, once you set a new Gmail address, you can’t remove it.
Google hasn’t officially announced this new feature and didn’t share any details about when or where it will be available, even after being asked by the press.
