Did Nancy and Jonathan break up in Season 5? Stranger Things creators confirm the truth

Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers have been through many challenges since Season 2, including periods of separation and the dangers of the Upside Down. After a particularly moving scene in the final part of Stranger Things Season 5, many viewers were left wondering about the future of their relationship.

Are Nancy and Jonathan still a couple, or did that dramatic moment signal their breakup? Be warned: spoilers follow!

What happens between Nancy and Jonathan in Volume 2?

In the second volume, Nancy and Jonathan find themselves stuck in the Upside Down version of Hawkins Lab as a strange, viscous substance begins to fill the room. Facing what seems like certain death, they finally have the honest conversation they’ve been putting off.

Everything came out – hidden secrets and lies that had been kept for years – after Nancy surprisingly confessed she disliked the band The Clash.

Jonathan confessed he hadn’t actually applied to Emerson, which Nancy had already guessed. He then revealed he had an engagement ring and surprisingly asked Nancy not to marry him – he called it an “un-proposal.” She agreed, they both expressed their love for each other, and shared one last hug.

Are Nancy and Jonathan actually broken up?

Yes. According to the Duffer brothers, that scene is a breakup.

Matt Duffer, the show’s creator, recently told PEOPLE that Nancy and Steve are officially over. He explained that the split was planned for some time, as they felt Nancy needed to develop as an individual character as the story neared its conclusion.

Ross Duffer also explained that Nancy and Jonathan’s connection stemmed from shared trauma, but pointed out that going through something scary together doesn’t guarantee a lasting relationship.

Even though the scene feels sweet and intimate, Volume 2 shows Nancy focusing on her own path, rather than building a relationship with either Jonathan or Steve.

As Stranger Things heads towards its final episodes and the danger intensifies, the show suggests that some relationships won’t make it through the apocalypse, even those we’ve been hoping would last.
