Whenever a new movie or show with LGBTQ+ characters comes out, it’s often followed by intense debate. People immediately start picking it apart – is it a good portrayal, is it realistic, and are the creators themselves part of the community? Because LGBTQ+ stories have been so rare for so long, each new one feels like it has to represent everyone’s experience. It’s understandable that viewers watch closely and judge how well it reflects their own lives, but it can feel like their perspective is the only one that matters. That’s why having a variety of stories, like Heated Rivalry despite its flaws, is so important. The more stories there are, the less pressure on each one, and the more likely it is that a wider range of people will feel represented.
We’re also seeing the power of this kind of visibility within the show itself. After Scott Hunter came out last week by kissing Kip after winning the championship, he went on to be named Most Valuable Player. At the awards ceremony, he talked about how sharing his personal life had a positive effect, particularly on young athletes in a sport that hasn’t always been accepting. What Scott doesn’t realize yet is that his actions have also inspired his teammates, like Ilya, who felt encouraged to visit Shane’s cottage after seeing Scott’s public display of affection.
It’s crazy how much secrecy is still surrounding their little getaway! Shane’s gone into full provisioning mode so they don’t have to venture into town, and Ilya is practically hiding from everyone at the airport – he even admitted he’s scared to be there. But inside that bubble they’ve built, they can finally just be normal, which, let’s be real, quickly means getting intimate. It turns out neither of them has been with anyone since they last saw each other! I figured that about Shane, but I was totally surprised when Ilya said the same. They made this deal to be completely honest with each other for the next two weeks, which is huge because it feels like they’ve been holding back for so long. It’s like they’re finally ready to say what they really think and feel.
Overall, this episode is a close-quarters conversation between two characters, and a lot of it is simply them spending time together and flirting. As Shane shows Ilya the different rooms, Ilya conveniently requests the one with all the best features – a clever move. This time together also allows them to open up about their personal lives, sharing details they wouldn’t have discussed during their previous brief encounters. Shane talks about his parents, and Ilya reveals a painful memory: he tells Shane about finding his mother after she died by suicide when he was twelve.
This episode features some intimate moments, though most of the action happens off-screen. One particularly charged scene involves Shane taking a call from Hayden about a new baby while Ilya attempts and succeeds in sexually engaging with him. Shane relies a bit too much on the mute button, but things ultimately work out. Afterwards, they discuss why the moment felt so intense, with Ilya pointing out Shane’s attraction to forbidden acts. While that initial thrill was a factor, Shane feels something deeper is happening. The show cleverly uses changes in the amount of sex depicted to reflect the evolving nature of their relationship. Early on, sex was central, but now that their connection has deepened, those scenes are less frequent – a trade-off I’m willing to accept, even if I miss them a little.
This retreat isn’t just about the group getting to know each other’s backgrounds; it’s also a chance to discuss their futures. Ilya, wanting to give up his Russian citizenship, is considering becoming a Canadian citizen or marrying Svetlana for American citizenship, which frustrates Shane. Shane wonders why Ilya doesn’t just marry a woman normally if he’s attracted to girls, suggesting it would be simpler. Ilya jokingly explains his unusual problem: he’s always surrounded by attractive women, but he secretly wishes they were hockey players with freckles and a weak backhand. Thankfully for Shane, Ilya admits he never wants to lose this particular ‘problem’.
This trip is showing them what their life could be like if they were together, and neither of them wants that feeling to end. They’re already brainstorming ways to keep some version of this going. Shane wakes Ilya up in the middle of the night with a plan: Ilya should move to Ottawa instead of marrying someone else, and they should start a charity together. He later suggests naming the charity after Ilya’s mother and focusing on suicide prevention. They figure if they’re publicly working on a good cause, they can maintain a believable friendship, and once they’ve both retired, they can finally be together openly. It’s a surprisingly selfless scheme – using charity for personal happiness without any tax benefits!
Okay, I was seriously holding my breath when he finally told Ilya how much he wanted to be together – he said it scared him, which was so sweet and vulnerable! Then they kissed, and Ilya confessed his love! Shane’s reaction? A perfect ‘Holy shit!’ and he immediately said it back before Ilya could even think twice. Honestly, Joe, after all this build-up, it was amazing. It felt way more real and intimate than anything we’ve seen before, and honestly, way better than just seeing…well, you know. And we still got a little bit of the physical side the next morning – a quick but steamy scene – so it was the best of both worlds!
I had a bad feeling the moment Shane told his parents he was at a silent meditation retreat. Despite all the planning to keep the trip a secret, that story seemed flimsy, and it quickly fell apart when his father caught them returning from the lake. This forced Shane to confront his parents, bringing Ilya with him. He knew he’d have to come out to them, but their biggest surprise wasn’t that he was dating a man – it was who he was dating. The show smartly focused on the shock of him being in love with his longtime rival, rather than simply focusing on him being gay. It’s a refreshing twist, and honestly, after Jennifer Garner’s powerful scene in Love, Simon, traditional coming-out stories feel a bit overdone.
Throughout the show, I’ve emphasized that their sexualities aren’t the most important aspect of their compelling connection, and Mr. and Mrs. Hollander appear to feel the same way. They’d already thought Shane might be gay, so they focused their questions on Ilya, wondering if this began at the All-Star game, if Ilya had ever intentionally lost to Shane, and if they’d been trying to hide the relationship. The couple admitted it was largely a secret, which disappointed Shane’s mother.
Stepping outside, she sincerely apologized for making him feel he needed to hide anything, but quickly shifted gears to focus on work – that’s just how Mrs. Hollander operates! Shane dismissed her suggestions about crafting a public statement and contacting sponsors, but Ilya stepped in to calm him down, reminding him he had support from family and his boyfriend. The use of the word “boyfriend” was a first, and it felt like a major moment – you could almost imagine celebrations breaking out!
What’s most surprising to Shane’s parents is how long this relationship has been developing. They’ve been together in some capacity for seven years, but it’s only recently that things seem to be getting serious and moving forward.
The latest episode showed Elena encouraging Scott and Kip to seek happiness, explaining that relationships can’t thrive without it. Meanwhile, Shane and Ilya are finally starting to find some happiness of their own, as seen during their time at the cottage and after being honest with Shane’s parents. This newfound joy is allowing their connection, which has been developing for seven years, to finally blossom.
