Wicked: For Good Box Office Passes Another Wizard Of Oz Adaptation In Worldwide Fantasy Charts

The musical Wicked: For Good is continuing to perform well in theaters, now surpassing the box office earnings of another film based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. While it hasn’t reached the massive popularity of last year’s Wicked movie – which was a huge cultural hit – this second part of the Broadway adaptation has earned $490 million globally since its release on November 21.

The movie Wicked, released in 2024, earned almost $758 million in theaters. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film is actually two parts that tell the story of how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda became Glinda the Good. The story unfolds before and during Dorothy’s time in Oz, and follows Elphaba’s fight against the Wizard (played by Jeff Goldblum) after she realizes he’s a fake.

According to The Numbers, Wicked: For Good is now the 41st highest-grossing fantasy movie worldwide, surpassing 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful (which is now at No. 42). It’s worth noting that the original Wicked film ranks at No. 25. Like Wicked, Oz the Great and Powerful is a prequel—this one tells the story of the Wizard from his perspective, with a loose connection to the original Wizard of Oz story.

The film features James Franco as Oz, Michelle Williams as Glinda, Mila Kunis as the Wicked Witch of the West (Theodora), and Rachel Weisz as Evanora. While it earned almost $500 million globally, it wasn’t a huge financial win because of its very high production costs – estimates suggest Disney spent around $300 million making it.

The first Wicked film was a critical success, earning 10 Academy Award nominations – including nods for Best Picture, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande). Both Erivo and Grande have received Golden Globe nominations for Wicked: For Good, though the film itself wasn’t nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Despite initial lukewarm reactions, the film Wicked might not receive as many Oscar nominations as expected, though audiences were impressed by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performances and the film remains in theaters. This gives the movie a chance to earn close to the same amount of money worldwide as the first Wicked film.

The Wizard of Oz remains a beloved story that continues to inspire creativity. Because the original books by L. Frank Baum are now freely available, many people have created their own versions of the story and its characters. Wicked: For Good, while not necessarily the most or least financially successful adaptation, is steadily becoming one of the highest-grossing fantasy films of all time.
