The Return of Rizzo, Who Did NOT Die!

Rizzo the Rat is back! After a long absence, the beloved Muppet made a surprise return, teased on the Muppets’ Instagram on Christmas Eve. The video showed Rizzo cheerfully greeting the season, unaware his appearance would be a holiday topic of conversation. Miss Piggy playfully bantered with him, and Rizzo even referenced his famous line from The Muppets Christmas Carol – “Light the lamp, not the rat!” – though Piggy pretended not to recognize it. Rizzo, known for connecting with the audience, cheekily responded that “dozens of people” would care. Rizzo hadn’t had a speaking role since 2016, following Steve Whitmire’s departure from The Muppets Studio, making his return a delightful surprise for fans.

The return of the silly rat wasn’t the only Christmas Eve surprise from the Muppets. Bean Bunny and Miss Piggy, both previously voiced by the same performer, also appeared in a special video for Disney Vacation Club members. The rat’s most recent major role was in The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz back in 2005.

Okay, Muppet fans, get ready! 2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for our felt friends. We’re getting a special with Miss Piggy and Sabrina Carpenter, and even further down the line, a full-on Piggy movie penned by Cole Escola – though we don’t have a release date on that just yet. But honestly, for now, just knowing there’s more Muppet goodness coming is enough to make me, and any self-respecting meece, incredibly happy!
