Percy Jackson Season 3 Setup: Annabeth & Thalia Flashbacks Explained

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 4 of Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 2, “Clarisse Blows Up Everything,” and the book The Sea of Monsters. Leah Sava Jeffries, who plays Annabeth Chase in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, has spoken about the flashbacks featuring Annabeth and Thalia Grace (played by Tamara Smart) and hinted at how they’ll be important for season 3. While Thalia’s tree has been a part of the show since the beginning, episode 4 marks the first time we see Thalia as a demigod character.

Jeffries recently told ScreenRant that the flashbacks in season 2 of Percy Jackson show Thalia acting as an older sister figure to Annabeth while they were both on the run. Although Annabeth’s bravery comes partly from her mother, Athena, the flashbacks also demonstrate that she learned a lot of it from Thalia.

Jeffries points out that because Thalia hasn’t aged while Annabeth has, the two are now more different than they once were – Annabeth is becoming more like Zeus’s daughter than Thalia’s. She also suggests this dynamic will continue to change as the story unfolds in season 2. Here’s what she had to say:

I always thought of us as having that classic big sister, little sister dynamic, especially when I remember how things used to be. But now that she’s frozen in time, it’s strange – it feels like we’re the same age, like we’re equals. It’s a really weird feeling.

This connects to what happens in season three, but essentially, things are different between us now. Watching the flashbacks in season two, you understand Annabeth’s past and her relationship with Thalia much better – it all starts to click. It’s like seeing a math problem with the answer, but not the steps to solve it.

The flashbacks really show Annabeth’s development and work ethic. Her bravery comes from both her mother, Athena, and her half-sister, Thalia.

Unlike the books, the new series shows us what happened to Annabeth, Thalia, Luke, and Grover when they were younger. Previously, we only learned about their pasts through Percy Jackson’s perspective.

As Jeffries pointed out, this information helps readers understand Annabeth’s relationships with Thalia, Luke, and Grover. It gives us a deeper look into Annabeth’s character, explains who Thalia was before she turned into a tree, and highlights just how awful it was when Luke poisoned her. This also makes the quest to save Grover and find the Golden Fleece – to heal Thalia’s tree – feel even more important.

According to Jeffries, the flashbacks foreshadow a major event from the second Percy Jackson book: Thalia’s revival. The Golden Fleece will not only restore Thalia’s tree, but also bring Thalia herself back to life as a demigod, no longer trapped as a tree. This is expected to happen at the end of season 2, paving the way for Thalia to become a key character in season 3.

As a huge fan of the Percy Jackson books, I’m really excited about season 3! It looks like Annabeth and Thalia are going to have a complicated relationship, because they’re discovering they’re more alike than they thought. It’s going to change their dynamic – that older/younger sister vibe we’ve seen – and honestly, I think the show is handling it brilliantly. The flashbacks are doing something the books couldn’t – really building up their history and setting the stage for this storyline. It’s awesome to see them filming and know more is on the way!
