In an interview with TopMob’s Gillian Blum, Walker Scobell, who plays Percy Jackson, clarified that his character’s line to Annabeth – “It only took me two days to see how special you were” – wasn’t meant to be romantic, despite how it might seem. He pointed out that the line can still be meaningful and show the growing connection between Percy and Annabeth, even without romantic feelings.
I was so excited when the first details about Season 2 came out! One line really stood out: they said Percy and Annabeth’s friendship would be evolving. Walker Scobell, who plays Percy, has confirmed that’s true, and that we’ll see this really important connection between them develop slowly over several seasons. I can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
He was surprised to see fans reading romance into some scenes, as the characters aren’t quite at that stage yet. Still, the evolving friendship between them is central to the story, and Scobell is committed to portraying that realistically.
As a huge fan of the books, I’m really enjoying Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, and Leah Sava Jeffries is fantastic as Annabeth Chase. It’s great to see their stories unfold over the three seasons that have been announced so far – they’re really sticking to the plot of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson novels. New episodes of Season 2 are dropping every week on Disney+, and I’m eagerly waiting for each one!
Walker Scobell Discusses How Episode 4’s Percabeth Line Is Just as Meaningful Without Romantic Intention

Walker Scobell reacted to the enthusiastic fan response to the line, “It only took me two days,” in Episode 4, admitting he sometimes wondered what everyone was so excited about.
He explained that preparing to play Percy Jackson required him to understand how people think and feel. He also admitted he would have never expected there to be any romantic undertones – whether intentional from Percy or not – in the character’s dialogue.
- TopMob: You have recently been on record saying that you think some fans have been reaching when it comes to Percabeth stuff, knowing full well that Episode 4 contains the entire scene of Percy and Annabeth talking on the boat, and Percy saying the line “It took me only two days to see how special you are.” Explain yourself.
Okay, so this isn’t my fault. Honestly, there have been moments where I’ve questioned what we were doing. It’s been a learning experience, though, because I’ve really had to figure out how people think while working on this project. It’s something I never expected.
Scobell believes Percy wouldn’t hesitate to say the same thing to Grover or Tyson. He points out that Percy is saying it to Annabeth is noteworthy, but for Percy, simply stating Annabeth is special is just him being honest.
He thought she’d likely tell Percy the same thing, and perhaps she already sees it that way. However, Percy felt he quickly realized she was someone truly special.
I don’t believe he wouldn’t say this to Grover or Tyson. It feels like a general sentiment he expresses, and the fact that he’s saying it to Annabeth is significant because she is special to him. I think she’d feel the same way about Percy. Perhaps she interprets it that way, but for Percy, it only took two days to realize how special she is. He quickly understood just how much she meant to him.
Scobell explained that when Percy calls Annabeth “special,” he doesn’t mean he immediately recognized how wonderful she is. Instead, he’s referring to her intricate and thoughtful personality.
He said that Percy usually needs more time to understand people, but he and Annabeth connected instantly. He added that it takes Percy much longer to understand Annabeth than anyone else.
I think what’s so heartbreaking about Percy calling her ‘special’ is that, as Scobell pointed out, he’s essentially admitting he realizes he’ll never truly understand her – and that realization only hit him after just two days! It’s like he’s already given up on bridging that gap between them, and it’s incredibly sad.
He didn’t really mean it sounded like, ‘I immediately realized how incredible you are.’ She’s a very complicated person, and Percy usually needs much more time to understand people. But they seemed to connect instantly, within just a couple of days of meeting. He probably said it took so little time because it does usually take him longer to understand her than anyone else, and that’s what he was trying to express.
It wasn’t that I quickly realized how wonderful you are. It’s that I quickly realized I’ll never truly understand you.
Walker Scobell Gives a Sneak Peek at Episode 5 with Story About Filming with a Parrot

Episode 5 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians advances the developing connection between Percy and Annabeth, and also includes a surprising number of animal appearances.
C.C.’s Island Resort and Spa is home to many animals, including the popular guinea pigs and a mischievous parrot. Walker Scobell shared that the parrot caused a bit of a stir during filming, but he didn’t reveal anything about Episode 5, which comes out next week.
- TopMob: On Threads, Becky Riordan [executive producer, and wife of Percy Jackson book author/executive producer, Rick Riordan] suggested to press interviewing you guys to ask you about filming with the parrot. Can you explain?
Thanks, Becky! Episode 5, with the parrot in C.C.’s spa, turned out really well, and I can’t wait for people to see it. They had this one parrot on set who was very friendly, but it would scream incredibly loudly during every take – it was almost deafening. Eventually, they started handing out earplugs to everyone because the screaming was so sudden and painful.
It’s particularly disruptive when you’re deeply focused on a scene, especially a really intense one, and then a parrot suddenly screams – it was incredibly loud. The room itself is very echoey; it seems designed to trap sound. So when the parrot screamed, the sound bounced off all the walls and came from every direction, completely breaking the concentration.
I actually held the parrot, which was really scary, but honestly, Leah was much more enthusiastic about holding all the animals. I’m glad I faced my fear and did it, though!
