Before Steven Spielberg’s new movie comes out in June, fans can revisit the world of his popular sci-fi series, Falling Skies, which is coming to Netflix. This series originally aired in the 2010s and is set in a post-apocalyptic future.
Steven Spielberg has been a major force in science fiction filmmaking since the 1970s, directing iconic movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park. Though he’s best known for his work in cinema, Spielberg has also occasionally brought his sci-fi vision to television.
He also served as an executive producer on Falling Skies, a five-season series coming to Netflix on January 1, 2026. The show, which first aired in 2011, stars Noah Wyle (known for The Pitt) as Tom Mason, a history teacher who rises to a leadership position among a group fighting to reclaim Earth after an alien invasion.
The TV series Falling Skies was developed by Robert Rodat, a writer and producer previously nominated for an Academy Award for his original screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. The two later collaborated on this sci-fi series for TNT. According to The Futon Critic, the initial idea for the pilot episode came from both Spielberg and Rodat, and Spielberg also coined the show’s title.
Okay, so Falling Skies had a really great cast – Noah Wyle led things, but Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, and a bunch of other talented actors like Maxim Knight, Mpho Koaho, Connor Jessup, Will Patton, Sarah Carter, and Colin Cunningham were all part of it. I really enjoyed it, and critics seemed to agree – it got positive reviews for all five seasons! It finished up in 2015, and the ending finally explained what those aliens were really after on Earth. It was a satisfying conclusion, honestly.

Despite strong initial ratings for its first season, Falling Skies is often forgotten when people talk about the best science fiction TV shows of the 2000s and 2010s. It debuted alongside several other sci-fi series, including Under the Dome, Outcasts, Black Mirror, Revolution, and The 100, and followed the success of popular shows like Lost, The X-Files, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica.
With Steven Spielberg returning to science fiction with his upcoming UFO film, Disclosure Day, expected in June 2026, interest in his previous sci-fi work is likely to grow. This includes lesser-known projects like Falling Skies, which will now be available to both new and existing fans on Netflix.
Everyone knows E.T. and Close Encounters are classics, but Falling Skies, now available on Netflix, offers a chance to see Steven Spielberg’s more recent work in the sci-fi genre. It’s being released at a good time, especially with Universal’s Disclosure Day coming up – both shows deal with alien invasions. Plus, Falling Skies arrives on Netflix just before Noah Wyle’s acclaimed drama, The Pitt, begins its second season, setting up a potentially big year for both Spielberg and Wyle.
