Pluribus writers explain why Carol was never going to have a happy ending

After the last episode of Pluribus aired, the show’s writers and executive producers, Gordon Smith and Alison Tatlock, discussed the season one finale and explained the choices they made regarding Carol Sturka’s storyline and character arc, as portrayed by Rhea Seehorn.

Episode 8 of the Apple TV show revealed more details about the alien intelligence. We saw Zosia show Carol the planet Kepler-22b, which originally sent the virus sequence to Earth.

In the last scene, Zosia lets Carol know someone is coming to see her – it’s Manousos, the only other person like them who’s immune and determined to discover a cure.

The story in Pluribus has been leading up to this encounter, but it unfolds in a surprising way. Be warned – spoilers follow!

Pluribus writers break down Carol and Zosia’s relationship

When Manousos poses a choice to Carol – saving the world or pursuing a romantic relationship – she briefly prioritizes love, leading to a short connection with Zosia.

But Carol’s peaceful vision falls apart when she discovers the Others are secretly using her stored eggs to create copies of her. She returns home and concedes to Manousos, agreeing to work with him to save the world, and she brings a nuclear bomb as a last resort.

Even if Carol had approached the conversation differently, the show’s creators told TopMob that a lasting relationship with Zosia wasn’t meant to be, and explained the reasons behind their brief connection.

Okay, so as a player, I really got the sense that Carol needed to kind of believe things were okay to even get into that relationship. The writers really focused on the psychological stuff all season, and it felt like they were saying Carol was at a point where she could almost convince herself things weren’t as bad as they were, just to feel a little bit of happiness and connect with someone. She basically had to trick her own brain to find some peace and enjoy herself.

We all knew something bad was going to happen. Even though we didn’t know exactly what it would be, we never really believed there would be a happy ending for anyone involved – if such a thing even existed.

Gordon Smith also pointed out that just because the season is over doesn’t mean things are completely finished. He compared it to a complicated relationship, saying that ‘good’ turbulent romances often have periods of being on and off.

Could we see Zosia and Carol together again in the second season of Pluribus? It sounds possible! Apple TV has already ordered two seasons of the show, and creator Vince Gilligan recently told TopMob that writing for season two is going well.

The writing team is currently working on Season 2, having started in late October. They’ve been steadily making progress and will resume after a holiday break, with plans to continue into January 2026.

In the meantime, you can read about Vince Gilligan’s stance on spoilers, a concerning incident involving a “Pluribus ad” and a hospitalization, and a preview of upcoming TV shows slated for 2026.
