Pluribus Season 2: Vince Gilligan Shares Filming Update and Story Plans

Following its dramatic season finale, Vince Gilligan has given a hopeful, though careful, update on season 2 of Pluribus. The Apple TV+ sci-fi series, set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, centers around Carol (Rhea Seahorn), who is determined to save the world from a virus that has made everyone pathologically optimistic – despite her being the most unhappy person on Earth.

The series, set in a future America, explores how a groundbreaking discovery impacts everything from government and influential groups to the lives of ordinary people. The first season of Pluribus ended with a dramatic cliffhanger – a threat at the atomic level – which has left viewers wondering what will happen next.

The show has quickly become known as a bold and innovative drama, but creator Vince Gilligan says fans will have to be patient for the next season. He told The Hollywood Reporter that while they have a solid plan for season 2, his approach to long-form storytelling is different than it was with shows like Breaking Bad. You can read his full statement below.

We have a clear direction for this project. We’re careful not to create limitations for ourselves like we sometimes did in the past – we used to almost enjoy getting into tricky situations! I was younger and had more stamina then. So, to be clear, we’re definitely not intentionally creating problems for ourselves with this [atomic bomb].

When questioned about a potential May start to production, Vince Gilligan jokingly dismissed the idea, saying, “May of what year? No, that’s not going to happen. I wish it would, but I’m being honest – just like the Others [referencing a previous show]. We are working incredibly hard, though.” Co-creator Gordon Smith added that they plan to return to production “as soon as possible.” Gilligan also mentioned he has other projects he’s interested in, but acknowledged he doesn’t work at the same pace he once did. You can read his complete statement below.

I understand some people will be disappointed, but we’re working at a pace we can maintain – it’s a slow and steady process, like a glacier melting. Honestly, I wish we could finish things faster, especially considering I don’t know how much time I have left and still have a lot I want to accomplish. But I’m not as quick as I used to be, so there will be longer gaps between new seasons. It’s just the reality of the situation – unless we can somehow speed up time, this is how it will be.

Though we’ll have to wait a bit for season 2, Vince Gilligan’s comments show the team is taking their time and being very thoughtful with the show’s development. The writers are already working, and things are moving forward, even if a firm filming schedule hasn’t been set. Gilligan seems determined to make the next season as good as, or better than, the impactful finale of Pluribus.

Viewers might be disappointed by this news, particularly after such a dramatic finale. However, the creators, Gilligan and Smith, have indicated that they’re building Pluribus with a larger, ongoing story in mind. Based on Gilligan’s previous work, this slower approach could lead to a strong second season that builds on the show’s exciting concepts while still maintaining what made it popular.

Pluribus season 1 is now streaming on Apple TV.
