Kumail Nanjiani’s new stand-up special, Night Thoughts, features some really funny observations on topics like anxiety, concert encores, and how therapy helped him deal with the negative reviews of the movie Eternals. But some of his strongest material is about his cat, Bagel. The jokes are great on their own, but I enjoyed them even more after hearing a heartwarming story about Bagel from the making of the Hulu special.
The lovely bit of trivia was posted this week on Instagram by Emily V. Gordon, who is Nanjiani’s wife in addition to being credited as an executive producer on Night Thoughts. In the social media post, she offers gratitude and appreciation to the folks at Hulu for a kindness that they extended to the couple in the development of the stand-up special – which was instigated by the sad passing of Bagel earlier this year. In a series of images with text, Gordon wrote,
Here’s some background about this Hulu special. Kumail filmed it earlier in 2025, and we finished editing it. Sadly, Bagel—who Kumail talks about a lot in the special—passed away in September. Hulu was incredibly supportive, not only letting us add a tribute to Bagel, but also going above and beyond by doing this for us:
Next up, I spotted a cropped version of the poster for Night Thoughts, and I’ve included it below for you to take a look.

If you look at the lower left corner of the poster, you’ll see a picture of Bagel, curled up on the bed with her owner. Neither Kumail Nanjiani nor Emily V. Gordon knew this photo would be included, and Emily V. Gordon says they both had a strong emotional reaction when they first saw it.
They included her on the poster as a way to honor her, and it made both of us cry when we saw it. I really appreciated the gesture and wanted to let them know.
Watching Kumail’s special, it was so clear how much he adored Bagel, his dog. It really hit me hard when he talked about saying goodbye – losing a pet like that must be incredibly painful. But what I loved was how beautifully they honored Bagel, both with the touching memorial segment and the poster. It really showed me they worked with a fantastic team who clearly cared a lot about making the special perfect.
You can now stream Night Thoughts on Hulu! Even if you’re not a cat person, it’s a hilarious comedy that’s well worth checking out – you’ll get a full hour of laughs.
