Star Trek has cast new actors to play Hikaru Sulu and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Paramount announced on Tuesday that Kai Murakami will take on the role of Sulu, and Thomas Jane will play “Bones.” With these additions, the show has now recast the entire main crew from the original Star Trek series for its final season.
The characters of the ship’s helmsman and doctor will be featured in the last episode of the current season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This casting news comes before the release of Season 5, which is anticipated in 2026.
John Cho as Captain Pike and Ethan Peck as Spock were already part of the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series, but Bones (Leonard McCoy) and Sulu are the latest original series characters to join them. Ethan Peck first appeared as Spock in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery before moving to Strange New Worlds. Celia Rose Gooding plays Nyota Uhura, and Jenna Bush plays Nurse Chapel in the series as well.
I was so excited when I heard Paul Wesley was going to be playing James T. Kirk, but unfortunately, the news leaked out during filming! He’s been showing up as a guest star on the show for a while now, which has been great. And then, in the season two finale, Martin Quinn officially joined the cast as Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott, the ship’s engineer – I was thrilled to see that happen!
A few characters from the original Star Trek haven’t appeared yet in Strange New Worlds. While Pavel Chekov, who was played by Walter Koenig, hasn’t been recast, that’s understandable – he didn’t join the show until the second season of the original series.
Yeoman Rand is unique among the original cast of Star Trek: The Original Series – she’s the only main character who was never played by anyone other than Grace Lee Whitney.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Finds Its Sulu and Bones
Many viewers will recognize Jane from his roles in films like The Punisher, The Mist, and Deep Blue Sea. He’s also well-known to science fiction fans as Detective Joe Miller on television. Additionally, he’s appeared in the shows Hung and Troppo.
This will be Murakami’s first time appearing on television, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He’s a seasoned performer with a background in stage acting, including work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and has also contributed to video games like Rise of the Ronin and Assassin’s Creed through performance capture.
The stars of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Martin Quinn. Carol Kane and Paul Wesley appear as recurring guests. Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers co-lead the show as showrunners.

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds first launched in 2022, it quickly became a hit, and that success continued into its second season in 2023. Because of its popularity, Paramount renewed the show for a fourth season and, more recently, announced a shorter fifth season to conclude the show’s main story arcs.
