I Just Found Out How Hugh Jackman Made His Second Wolverine Audition Happen (And It Involves A ‘Perfect’ ‘D–k’ Move)

Freddy Krueger, Edward Scissorhands, and Wolverine are all iconic characters known for having blades instead of hands. They’re also so closely linked to the actors who originally played them – Robert Englund, Johnny Depp, and Hugh Jackman – that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in those roles. Hugh Jackman has tried to retire from playing Wolverine, but fans still expect to see him reprise the role in future Marvel films, potentially including a sequel to the Avengers movies.

Well-known as being one of the nicest gents in Hollywood and beyond, Jackman appeared on the podcast Sibling Revelry to talk to its two genial hosts, Oliver and Kate Hudson, about his belief that being a bit of an impatient dick during his first X-Men audition helped spark enough interest that the casting directors brought him back. In a clip shared on Instagram, Jackman explained that the Marvel movie came about as he was striking out to get his career going outside of Australia. Speaking to his local caché at the time, he said:

I wasn’t a big star like Nicole Kidman or Russell Crowe, but I was working steadily and eventually went to England to perform in Oklahoma!, which was very successful there. After that, I got a chance to audition for X-Men. It was incredibly lucky timing – the audition was on a Wednesday, squeezed between afternoon and evening performances, and I had to be back on stage by seven o’clock. I rushed into town and waited for my turn.

Honestly, it seemed like a really risky move to even try auditioning for a new role while already committed to a job, especially with a tight schedule. But Hugh Jackman was so sure of himself – he believed he could make the audition and still get back in time for his evening shows. When it started looking like that wouldn’t be possible because so many other actors were trying out, he told me he got a little… subtly annoyed and determined to make it work anyway.

I finally went ahead and did it. I told the guys I had to leave, and they said I wasn’t up next. I told them that was fine, I had a performance to get to, and wished them well. Honestly, I was really angry, and any nervousness I had disappeared. I just went in and did it – it felt perfect for the Wolverine character, actually.

From what I understand, the people running the initial auditions really responded to the raw energy Hugh Jackman brought, even though things got pretty intense! They decided to give him a chance to finish, and thankfully they did. Apparently, that initial spark is what caught their attention, even though he admitted he totally lost that same feeling when he came back for the first callback. He actually said…

I went into the first audition not caring at all, but they ended up loving my performance and wanted to bring me back. Then, for my next audition, I was completely enthusiastic and eager to please, asking what they needed from me.

Just because Hugh Jackman seemed confident didn’t automatically make him the frontrunner for the role of Wolverine. He’s mentioned his initial audition lasted only about 20 seconds, and he actually auditioned seven times before finally getting the part. Kevin Feige, before becoming head of Marvel Studios, also supported him, which helped keep him in consideration. Now, 26 years later, fans are wondering if he’ll return for the first official X-Men movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Before we get too excited about any Wolverine rumors, I’m really looking forward to seeing Hugh Jackman in a totally different role! He’s starring with Kate Hudson in a movie called Song Sung Blue, which is a biopic about Neil Diamond and a tribute to his music. Early reviews are amazing, and it comes out on December 25th – I can’t wait!
