So, remember back in 2021 when they announced a Final Fantasy IX anime? It was being made by a studio called Cyber Group Studios. Well, that studio unfortunately closed down earlier this year, which made me worry about the anime. But good news! It looks like someone else is picking it up and getting it finished. They’re aiming for a release date around 2028, which feels like a long wait, but I’m just glad it’s still happening!
I just read some interesting news in the latest issue of Écran Total, a French magazine that covers the film and TV business. Apparently, after Cyber Group Studios shut down, Euro Visual is now taking over the anime series. Someone over on ensis.bsky.social posted a picture of the report – it’s in French, but they included a translation too!

LMel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc – the children of the legendary Bibi – are the last of the dark mages from across the four continents. They’ve found happiness in the city of Alexandria, protected by its friendly, though often curious, people. But their peaceful life is about to be disrupted. One day, Koln discovers Mel frozen like a statue in the inn where he works, leading them to wonder if the tragic fate of their father is finally catching up to them.
Mel, Kolm, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc are the children of the legendary hero Bibi, and they’re the last of the black mages in their world. They currently live peaceful lives in the city of Alexandria, protected by the kind, if occasionally nosy, locals. But their tranquility is shattered when Kolm finds his sister Mel frozen and lifeless at the inn where he works, leading them to wonder if a dark fate connected to their father has finally found them.
The show will be a 2D animated series designed for kids ages 6-13. There will be thirteen episodes, each about 22 minutes long.
The storyline details align with a leak from earlier this year, revealing information about the Final Fantasy IX anime project when it was under development at Cyber Studios Group. This leak came from production materials shared online by former employees after the company closed. It appears the current production team is using the same concepts originally created for the show.
You can now play Final Fantasy IX on PlayStation 4 (and PlayStation 5), Xbox One (and Xbox Series X|S), Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Steam, and PC via the Xbox Store. We’ve also got guides to help you with the game, which you can find here.
