The classic crime thriller Fargo, which went on to inspire a highly acclaimed anthology series, is moving to a new streaming platform. The 1996 film, directed by and written by Joel and Ethan Coen, follows a police chief investigating a kidnapping plot. A car salesman hires two inept criminals to abduct his wife as part of an extortion scheme.
The movie Fargo was a huge success, earning over $60 million despite only costing $7 million to make. It was also critically acclaimed and won many awards, eventually inspiring the popular Fargo anthology series on FX nearly twenty years later.
The classic movie Fargo, released in 1996, will be available to stream on HBO Max starting January 1st. While it’s being removed from Paramount+, you can still buy or rent it digitally, or purchase a physical copy.
The film featured a fantastic cast, including Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Harve Presnell, and Peter Stormare. This blend of crime and comedy was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and earned William H. Macy a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Ultimately, it won two Oscars: Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Frances McDormand, who played the police chief.
In 2014, the movie Fargo was turned into a TV series. Created by Noah Hawley, who also writes and directs many episodes, the show, like the film, centers on ordinary people caught up in a crime that quickly gets out of hand. The Fargo series has been highly praised, earning 201 nominations and winning 36 awards.
One of the show’s strengths is that each season features a completely new story and set of characters. The acting has been particularly strong, with a cast full of well-known and talented performers like Ted Danson, Cristin Milioti, Bob Odenkirk, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Carrie Coon, to name a few.
