Be warned: the following discussion contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 4 of Spartacus: House of Ashur, titled “Blood and Bone”.
Despite the violence, sexuality, and political schemes in Spartacus: House of Ashur, a touching romance develops between Korris and Opiter. Played by Graham McTavish and Arlo Gibson, this is the first time McTavish has played a romantic lead, and he welcomed the opportunity to explore a new kind of role.
I recently spoke with the actor about his role in the new Spartacus series for MovieWeb. I noted that this type of role was a departure for him and asked if that presented any difficulties, especially since it was the first time he’d played a character with a significant romantic connection. He replied, “That’s a very good question,” and continued:
Honestly, one of the best parts of working on the show was getting to really dig into a character’s complexities. It’s true, I don’t think I’ve ever gotten to explore that depth of a role in anything I’ve filmed before.
The latest episode of Spartacus: House of Ashur, now available on Starz, reveals a new side of both Korris and McTavish as he fully commits to his relationship with Opiter. The episode features a passionate kiss between the two characters, which the actor described as “beautifully written, paced, and believable.” He didn’t want to say the scene was easy, explaining that it tapped into a very human experience.
Korris’s story is something everyone can connect with. Regardless of your sexual orientation, we’ve all experienced the fear of opening up to someone and taking the risk of being vulnerable. That feeling of revealing your true feelings and giving your heart to another person is universal, and I think that’s what will really connect with viewers.
What Does Graham McTavish Personally Bring to the Role of Korris?

I was curious about what makes Sam Heughan so good at portraying tough characters in historical dramas – he’s appeared in shows like Outlander, Empire, and Rome, and the film King Arthur. When I asked him about this, and specifically how it informed his new role as Korris, he explained that he drew inspiration from his own family.
I can relate to him on some level – that cautious personality. I’m not overly cheerful or sentimental, but I’m also not a grumpy old man. I definitely take after my father, and he’s influenced a lot of the characters I’ve played, especially that tough, realistic, Scottish way of looking at things. He’s the type who would go to the ends of the earth for someone he cares about, but if you cross him, you’ll have trouble.
It’s more than just refreshing to watch McTavish play Korris in Spartacus: House of Ashur – he’s been fantastic. His performance as the Doctore has been a highlight, and viewers are eagerly anticipating how his relationship with Opiter will develop, particularly after Ashur released him from his obligations to the lanista in the latest episode.
