There’s been a lot of discussion about how accurately Rachel Sennott’s show, I Love LA, portrays Los Angeles. But really, there is no single “real” Los Angeles. The city means different things to different people, and we don’t expect documentaries to cover every single detail. What I Love LA does capture is a very specific corner of the city – the world Sennott and her friends actually inhabit. People who live and work in that part of L.A. genuinely frequent those spots, order those drinks, and try to stay close to the Silver Lake Trader Joe’s.
I was hooked from the first episode! Seeing Maia and Tallulah waiting for Tenants of the Trees felt so… LA. And that Wi Spa shirt Tallulah wore? It was a sneaky little detail that made me realize she was going to be trouble. The finale was wild – Charlie flying all that Din Tai Fung to his ex felt like a surprisingly sweet, if a little basic, gesture. Luckily, the show got renewed for a second season, and I’m already excited to see where they take us – and which iconic LA (and now NY!) spots they feature next.
Café Tondo
Café Tondo is L.A.’s most popular and energetic wine bar – it’s the place to be! Located in Chinatown where Oriel used to be, it’s become known for people enjoying their (often $40) bottles of orange wine outside the bar itself. Plus, it’s conveniently located right under the metro line, which adds to the lively atmosphere. The scene is always buzzing – you might catch someone openly emotional, or even Tame Impala spinning records. It’s a great spot to see and be seen!
The Magic Castle
The club is pretty much what it sounds like: a private hangout for magicians, though it’s not super hard to get invited. Expect hidden rooms, expensive drinks, and magicians all over the place. Maia and her friends are there because Maia thinks a magician would be a fun (but probably terrible) rebound relationship. Plus, the club has a strict black-tie dress code, and I’m really curious to see what Tallulah comes up with for that!
Walt’s
This spot is a pinball hall and bar serving beer and wine. It’s located near the Capri Club – you might remember it as where Charlie had a rough time in episode two. Maia and her friends are there for a birthday party – it’s one of a few places known for lively, and sometimes chaotic, celebrations. People often bring their own cakes from Quarter Sheets, hang out on the patio, and inevitably bump into people they’d rather avoid.
The Silver Lake Gelson’s
Before Erewhon became popular, Gelson’s was known for having a great hot bar. This particular Gelson’s location is special for two reasons: it’s right across the street from Tenants, and it’s where Walt Disney started his animation career. Maia and her friends are there shopping, grabbing things like dried mango from the bulk section, and discovering the history of the building – Alani points out that it was Walt Disney’s first studio.
Horses
Horses used to be an incredibly exclusive and popular restaurant, but then it became known for some disturbing allegations. Now, dining there is seen as a bit of a rebellious or edgy choice.
Maia and her colleagues are there because a potential client insisted on having dinner at Horses. They’re trying to recall the details of the scandal surrounding the restaurant – what happened, if it was resolved, and whether it even matters anymore.
432 Park
The building is a luxury condo, but it’s starting to show its age – the exterior is cracking, and the garbage disposal system is incredibly loud. Maia and her friends have moved in, and it seems Tallulah secured a place with the understanding she’d promote it on social media. However, she’s already managed to break the trash chute thanks to all the packages she receives as an influencer.
Bernie’s
The restaurant feels like a slightly nicer version of a classic American chain, think Applebee’s, but better. The scene primarily serves to feature brief appearances by Missy McIntosh and Marty Miller.
Yoga at Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Ever wonder what it’s like to do yoga in a unique spot? In Hollywood, people practice yoga every morning in one of the city’s oldest cemeteries, right near the graves of famous figures like Douglas Fairbanks, Anne Heche, and Halyna Hutchins. As for Maia and her friends, they’re working on their yoga skills – a classic way to start when someone is trying to improve themselves.
